ZandEDad
So I've got the Reef Octopus BH-1000 (the one with the outside pump) hanging on the back of my tank. There's about a 1/4 inch of room between the intake pipe and the bottom of the surface skimmer attachment. A few months back, I had a baby clown get sucked in (strange...that sounds just like a movie...). Yesterday morning, I came home with my beautiful new 6-line wrasse. He was eating and looked otherwise in good health, aside from a little bullying by the orchid dottyback. I checked this afternoon and couldn't find him, but wasn't concerned until I heard the grinding noise from the skimmer. Yep, there he was. Cleaned it out, put it back and fed the tank. As I'm watching, one of my cleaner shrimp, who was going after some surface food, got sucked in too! Luckily, I was there to pull the plug before he could get sucked all the way in. I immediately stuffed the skimmer box with filter floss. Anyone else have this problem? Has anyone come up with a more-permanent fix than floss? Link to comment
Deleted User 6
Can you put some kind of netting over the surface skimmer? i'm having a hard time visualizing the setup. Link to comment
TristanC
I have a bh1000 as well, i also have two oc clowns and two cleaner shrimp. Ive never had that issue, my cleaners even go on the skimmer box to clean from time to time, sorry to hear about the bad luck Link to comment
ZandEDad
Netting might work, but I have to figure out how to attach it to the hose can still go in. Even better would be to lift the entire skimmer so that the surface skimmer attachment really skims the surface rather than sitting a good inch below. If only I'd gone with a sump... Link to comment
