.Newman.
glad you like em! This bowl has a little story behind it. It started out as an experiment with red cherry shrimp and was used as a breeding bowl for them. I was getting about 30+ babies out of this bowl every couple of months from a single breeding pair of adults! Here is what it looked like back when it was only cherry shrimp (you can only spot juveniles here): Link to comment
jgpico
wow this thing is pretty sweet. I really like those shrimp. I have always wanted to try my hand at a planted shrimp tank but figure its almost as much work for that as it is for a reef tank. sweet bowl man. Link to comment
mbarton2010
looks great! i cant wait to get some shrimp. my crappy LFS doesnt sell them. they didt even know what a galaxy rasbora was Link to comment
.Newman.
Then i figured, maybe if cherry shrimp were so successful, why not finally try the crystal shrimp in this bowl? To do this i had to convert from tap water to RO water (the same RO i was already using for my reefs) The RO water was re-mineralized with some GH additive (Seachem) and seemed perfect for low pH, soft water shrimp. I originally added 8 Crystal shrimp to my bowl, but due to the hot summer i lost the majority of them. However this was not before i got them to breed once they became adults (I purchased tiny juveniles to start with) It's only one baby so far, but during the winter, house temps wont be so high so the crystal shrimp will be able to reproduce normally. I realize that i only have two females left now, but more crystals are on their way. I will hopefully introduce a new batch of small juveniles sometimes this week. inevitably i'll get the males i need to get the shrimp breeding again. My brother and I are currently upgrading our 20 gal planted shrimp tank to a 55 gal planted shrimp tank It's not that much work at all. Trimming plants every month or so and water changes every 2-3 weeks is all you really need to do. If you want to be really daring, you can add fish that feed off the baby shrimp. I have 3 scarlet badis badis and 3 freshwater pipefish. Pure Epicness. Sorry OP for jacking the thread. Link to comment

If you notice the bowl only has the light as a plug. this means no filter or maintenance other than water changes and weekly feeding of the shrimp. Keeping shrimp can be very low work. especially if you start with cherry shrimp! Link to comment

I do not mind I imagine larger shrimp tanks a a lot more intense than small bowls, but then again the shrimp breeding capability increases exponentially! Link to comment

You bet it does! My brother read somewhere that a 20 gal can comfortable house 200-300 shrimp. So by those numbers a 55 gal can have almost 1000 shrimp without being overstocked at all. .Newman.
is this your only planted? It has recently become my only planted tank. I just took down all the plants from my 40 gallon planted tank a week ago and sold them. The only thing left were some lame java ferns that i plan on using in my driftwood scape (I am currently redoing the tank. its 80% complete right now, and of course its still running with fish). .Newman.
My 40 gal used to look like this back when it was featured in the Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine: And here is a vid of it just before i tore the plants down in the last couple of weeks: So yes its been through a goldfish and an angelfish (still have the angel in here). can you imagine that my cherry shrimp population was still living in this tank throughout all this? They have their own little cube tank now. Link to comment

.Newman.
I am moving soon and cannot take this large tank with me (only taking my 1 gal bowl here and my 3 gal pico reef). So i decided to take the planted part of it down. I would have taken the whole tank down but the owner (parent) didnt approve, so I'm redoing it to be low maintenance with easy fish, and fool-proof because i am leaving it with my parent who wont do much to care for their tank when i'm gone. Already ordered the BN plecos, They'll be here next week. Link to comment
