duderubble
I'm not seeing anything to worry about here. Go ahead and start your cycle with some live rock. How long have you been running it empty and why? Link to comment
Dani3d
It's probably some biofilm made of the bacterias that are starting to colonize your tank. Since you don't have any support for them to colonize they build up on the glass and anything they can find. Get some liverock and the problem will disapear. It is hard to see on your photo, and maybe it is some calcium build up but then if that's what it is, you must check your calcium level to make sure it is not too high. Should be easy to clean either way by rinsing the pump in freshwater. Link to comment

How long have you been running it empty and why? Hi~there~ lol wow Thank you for your super fast reply! I have been running empty because long story short~ my live rocks died(No I killed it )~and now they are on my veranda + some financial hiccup I think the problem was salinity, lack of water flow and water change - basically because I am a beginner at keeping fish~hahaha~lol I love this forum~ everyone is soo helpful Thank you! metrokat
You can keep the dead rock in there even now. And seed it with live rock. Link to comment

I guess bacteria growth is good right? lol I did a 100% water change + reclean the sand but didnt replace the filter media cause I didnt wanted to kill all the bacteria~maybe that is why ~ lol Yes ! I will check my calcium but i have to get the test kit first~~! I only have high ph,amm, nitrate, nitrite test kits. What other test kits should I get? You can keep the dead rock in there even now. And seed it with live rock. Thank you for your kind advise~! Yes I have heard.. I am caught between buying new base rock or putting back the live rocks I have killed.... bcoz It was kinda grey and black on the outside...hence why I took them out.... It's kinda whitish grey now though~ I freaked when I saw all the worms and ect coming out and the rock was stinking real bad and turning black.. haha I guess that is what you get for lack of researching~ Link to comment

altolamprologus
You didn't kill your live rock. The black stuff is just die off (probably dead sponges) from being taken out of the ocean and shipped. The worms were most likely beneficial hitch hikers and the smell is from the cycling process. Go ahead and put the rock back in and leave it alone. Link to comment
