Are they bad in having a reef tank ?

I use one. They CAN be used but more maintenance is required than other filtration methods. Right now I clean mine out 1x per week but I'm switching over to twice a week because of algae issues. You must clean the canister to prevent the "crap" that gets trapped in there from breaking down in nitrates, phosphates, etc. that will go into your tank and cause harm. I also use one. No issues as long as you maintain it.

I use one for now and I am cleaning once a week. I like it because it is silent and has great media baskets. But you need to keep up on it's cleaning.
