Bill Nye
Hello everyone, I posted this in the beginner forums because I am a noob on this subject so I need some smarty pants to school me. I have been playing around with setting up a cold water tank based on life in and around Narragansett bay. My main question is on keeping the tank cool. I was thinking of just doing a small tank maybe 10 gal with a sump. Do you think an iceprobe would be sufficient to cool the tank or will I need a chiller? If so what size? Link to comment
Jacobnano
I would get a chiller. That way you always know you can keep the tank cool if you get one of those really hot days. For a ten gallon I believe 1/15 or 1/10 HP would be sufficient. It really depends on the deal you can get on the chiller, and what kind of insulation you will have on the tank. Link to comment

I will keep on the lookout for a used chiller they come up on the local reef forum quite often. I also did some emailing around as I was a little curious about collection laws in RI. From what I have seen, if you are a RI resident you can collect most inverts and shellfish without a license but there wasnt much info on non-game species. As for insulation, are you talking using schedule 80 piping or do you actually insulate the piping? I have heard people using pretty thick acrylic tanks on these guys to keep the cold in ... do you think thats necessary on such a small one? Link to comment
jsclimbn
im acutally looking to do the same thing with a ten gallon and a 1/10 chiller. i live 20 minutes away from la jolla shores in san diego ca, so it would be fun to bring some of that next to my other nano tank. my thoughts were just to get a chiller, use the air driven protein skimmer from my old jbj tank, and go to the shores and collect goodies to put in it. being so close to the beach and to the scripps aquariums, they filter ocean water for people, so i collect water from the location, collect livestock from the location, and cool it. sounds easy enough.... I am glad you took the initiative to look into the local laws. Sounds good to me, inverts are the most interesting often times! That is up to you. I am not following my own suggestions on my tank because I have an AC in my room where I keep the room at 70 or below. I would think about going acrylic, or going up to a 15g. I say this because the 15g has substantially thicker glass than a ten. The best option would be to go acrylic though. im acutally looking to do the same thing with a ten gallon and a 1/10 chiller. i live 20 minutes away from la jolla shores in san diego ca, so it would be fun to bring some of that next to my other nano tank. my thoughts were just to get a chiller, use the air driven protein skimmer from my old jbj tank, and go to the shores and collect goodies to put in it. being so close to the beach and to the scripps aquariums, they filter ocean water for people, so i collect water from the location, collect livestock from the location, and cool it. sounds easy enough.... Yea that would be easy enough except there are VERY STRINGENT laws in California about collection. I would look them up but I think it is basically "you can't pick up anything". I could be wrong so check, but I seem to remember very strict laws. Link to comment

I live in the SD area too and have thought about the same thing to house some catalina gobies and local wildlife, but being a student who just had to pay up lack of funds has put the project on hold.. Since I am in graduate school for environmental science and management I would be remiss if I did not consult the regulations . There is a 10 g acrylic tank thats already drilled on the local forums for free...too bad the guy hasnt been responding I think that may be my best bet. Hopefully I will be able to find a used chiller for under 200 but we shall see. Link to comment
