Protein skimmer foaming like crazy

Just this morning I put my base rock in the tank (my formerly live rock that has gone through a 12 hr bleach bath in a 5 gallon bucket of water with about a cup of bleach - after 12 hours I rinsed it several times with fresh water and put it in the tank).

My skimmer is foaming like crazy now, so much that it is pushing the lid off the skimmer cup and bubbling up through the air hole in the top (why is that there, anyway?).

Is there something in the bleach that would make it do that? I also put chlorine/chloramine remove in to get any residual stuff that might be left over. Maybe that is causing this effect? I made sure to use regular bleach, it wasn't scented or anything.

Should I just turn the protein skimmer of for a while? It pulled a ton of yellow crap out of the tank overnight, but not so much that it was pushing the top off the collection cup.

I'd turn it off and wait a few days. Do a water change after that and see what happens from there. If it's still foaming after another few days I'd do a second water change... but the wait/first one should fix this problem from what I've read.

Well, its been about a day and the protein skimmer is still foaming like crazy. The bubbles are very dense, almost like soap suds. I can do a water change but it may have to wait til tomorrow, I don't have time to do one today.

My concern is when I put my rock through the bleach bath, I noticed it was foaming really bad then but just assumed it was the bleach oxidizing any organic matter. The bleach is regular bleach, not scented or anything but it does say "patented splash-less formula" so I am wondering if there is something in it that is causing this problem. How much of a water change do you think I need to do to get things back on track?

id let the skimmer pull out everything like empty it out as needed because it could be organics in the water after killing off that LR

just my 2 cents

+1

Mine was crazy at first too, it does take a bit for them to break in, you can turn in down (so bubbles form lower from the cup) and that may help a bit and will keep it from overflowing on you.

Yeah, I've tried dialing it way down, though, almost to the point where no bubbles are produced and it still is producing way too much foam. I think I am going to do a 50 percent water change and see what happens.

I hope I haven't contaminated the tank or equipment with something toxic.

i would turn down your skimmer to its lowest possible and keep emptying it. whatever is causing it to foam up, the skimmer will remove. if it is something toxic then you definitely want it out of the tank and you can count yourself lucky that your skimmer can remove it.
