xxbrianxx
I'm building a fixture using cfl bulbs and after testing...it get's pretty hot so I'm thinking about adding a couple cooling fans. The thing is though..I have limited space for adding fans so the only way I can think of adding them is one on top of the other. Would this cause problems? Also, I want more than one fan in case one fails. I'm pretty sure my acrylic splash guard would start warping if the fixture was left without any active cooling. Link to comment
disaster999
adding 2 fans on top of each other would be no better than having one fan only. try running one fan, you will be surprised how much heat they remove. if not find a high output fan, but those are very noisy. Link to comment
xxbrianxx
well I'm not really looking for the extra cfm, I just want another fan running in case one fails. Those lights are seriously gonna cook the splash guard covering them. Link to comment
mpc
Get a decent fan and you won't have to worry about it failing. Actually if I think - I can't remember if I have ever seen a PC fan that wasn't working. Even the fans from the old days (like 95 - I have a couple) still work. So I would say a fan is one of the most reliable components in the PC. Link to comment
tylernt
I've seen a few HP servers with stacked fans, so it is a viable approach. However, they are insanely noisy so if you do this you will want to undervolt the fans with resistors, to slow and quiet them down. Close proximity with saltwater can cause fans to corrode and die over time. Try to orient your fan so that it is not pulling in moist air near the water surface. Link to comment
