cf21
When I was setting up my first reef tank I had a thought, but never acted on it. I had an established freshwater tank and to seed a new freshwater tank you just squeeze your filter pad into your new tank water to let all the bacteria transfer to the new tank. Would this work in a freshwater to saltwater tank? Could you seed a saltwater QT tank with freshwater bacteria. I searched and found mixed thoughts and wondered what you guys think. I'm not trying this, it was just a curious thought of mine. Link to comment
AZDesertRat
No, most bacteria are different between the two. Link to comment
malawian
yea it shouldnt work. by exposing those bacteria to salt they should all die. bacteria that can go from a fresh to salt environment are pretty rare (comparatively) and i dont know of any that could go from fresh to salt very quickly like that. maybe if the salinity were increased over a long period (days or weeks). cf21
That's what most have said. I figured it wouldn't since most bacteria in a bottle have either fresh or salt water varieties. Link to comment
