Addinali
I have fragged zoas and palys for over 2 years know I never wore gloves I never wore eye protection. But anyways sunday night I was taking frags of palys for a friend well why doing this they squirted me in the eye. I went to the bathroom right away to flush my eye with saline that night it looked a little red nothing major. well the next morning It was extremely red but I had to do a photoshoot that day so I didnt go.to the doctor. that night my eye was swollen almost I started freaking out pooring more saline into it the next morning not as bad but still not good looking so today I decided to go to the doctor. I went there they told.me they couldnt do anything to go to the er right away. Well I went they sent me away to a eye spicalist. The eye spicalist looked at my eye and said if I did not have my contect in the palytoxin would have burned through my cornea and I would have lost my sight in my left eye. He squirted in some medicne and gave me a perscription my eye right now is alot better but still bad. I just thank god for my contect or I would be blind in one eye right now. I use to be the one to say its bs but now I believe. And now I will wear my safety glass but probley still wont wear gloves thank you for reading thought I would just give my personal experiance for thoughs who still dont believe like I didnt. I know this kinda stuff has been posted before but there is new people on here who needs to hear it. Thanks for reading Link to comment

Euphyllia
Yikes. This is a firm warning to those of us without eye protection. To be honest, I like to frag zoas in the tank. Any juice that squirts out won't go into my eye. I have a pair of glasses, so I'll be wearing them from now on. Thanks for sharing and get well soon! Link to comment

tinctorus
Yeah I got a nasty infection on my finger while I was making some zoa frags a few years back, While I was cutting the zoa's off with the fresh razor blade I slipped and sliced my finger open pretty good, Im not one to complain so I just worked through it and finished what I needed to do "I had NO idea about palyotoxin at the time" Well that night my finger was kinda throbbing but I just figured it was because it was a fresh deep cut and I had maybe put the bandaid on a little to tight...Well 3 days go by and this 3/4" long slice on my finger is now a gaping/rotting looking wound with disgusting puss and an even worse smell so I said SCREW THIS I need to go to the Dr ASAP cause the Doc thought it looked like tissue necrosis similar to like a venomous snake bite. Anyways they ended up cutting out a decent area of my finger and sterilized it and then kept me on iv antibiotics for 2 days and then on cipro for 2 weeks From now on whenever I do ANYTHING involving fragging zoas I ALWAYS wear 2 pairs of latex surgical gloves Its all fun and games till someone loses a eye. I always thought the quote was its all fun and games until someone losses an eye and then its HILARIOUS?? No? is that not proper? LOL Link to comment

Zer0
And you never believed it before you had it squirt toxin in your eye? Or you just never cared until you had a near-blindness experience.. Either way, I'd say you were pretty foolish to assume it couldn't and wouldn't happen to you. Link to comment

I just thougt all the stories where bs and the palytoxin was not in the zoas and palys In the aquarium trade but yes I was foolish Link to comment
nhart608
Glad to hear you are ok. You can't publish stories like this too often IMO. I had started using gloves about a month ago anytime I need to move rock work, or glue a zoa frag. Even if you just cut your finger on a rock, you are open to an infection, so BSTS. Link to comment
