Chipie
Hi, I have a 20g i want to set up again but i would like to have only sps in there. No fish if i can. Is this doable or should i add one fish just for coral food? If i have to have a fish. Which one would you recommend? A wrasse maybe? What do you think? I have a cpr back pack skimmer i can use and a aquaclear 70 for a fuge. Got a few koralia 1 powerheads and a 100w titanium heater with controller. A auto top off with magnet mounts. It will be lit with 24 3w cree leds. No sump. I will have a very shallow sand bed just for estetic reasons. About 15lbs of dry rocks(cleaned in muritaic acid) and 5 pounds of new walt smith live rocks. I have a 180g mixed reef and have been in the hobby for a while but am i setting myself up to more trouble than it's worth? Link to comment
Seamonkey84
If you don't want fish you could get a cleaner shrimp or two and just feed them every other day. Would recommend some filter feeder food as well, I like oyster feast myself. I have a clown fish in my ten gallon Sps tank along with two skunk cleaners. Link to comment
JaneG
One sixline wrasse could actually be beneficial as pest control. You could also do no fish and just feed supplemental food for corals if you would rather that. Something similar to this has been done before, so I think it could work with no fish- I would just make sure that the corals get nitrogen in some way. Link to comment
malawian
i would go with just inverts if you dont want fish. a nice cleanup crew will help pick up any coral food they dont get. a shrimp and a full complement of snails should do the trick. Link to comment
Euphyllia
It's possible. I kept my SPS tank without fish for a few months and they were happier then because there was less nitrate/phosphate/etc. They don't need food, but if you insist on feeding them, try RN Oyster Feast. Link to comment
HecticDialectics
i've never seen any evidence that the vast majority of sps are even capable of truly eating anything we traditionally associate as "food" for "supplemental feeding" anyway. Def. possible. No biggie at all. Link to comment
Swanwillow
I don't see why it would be an issue. Lighting +filtration+water of the salt variety is all they need... would probably be so much easier to do Link to comment

Def. possible. No biggie at all. sps do ingest food source but it has be done correctly... in laymens after light go out and they slime up real good feed the tank i use zeovit product..turn pumps and if you have skimmer off leave off through the night and let them retract the mucus into their digestive tract then turn back on in am you can do this every night but i recommend starting every other night Link to comment
flypenfly
I tried this for a growth SPS only tank and the sps did much, much better with fish in it. SPS needs fish poop. It's fresher and better than any off the shelf additive. Link to comment

I'd love to see the images and layouts. Link to comment
JPF
We can pee on each other about digestive tract or we can get the gist of what he said. http://coralreef.noaa.gov/aboutcorals/coral101/anatomy/ Link to comment
jestep
If you feed coral specific foods there should be plenty of nutrients in the tank without adding fish. With the exception of possible pest control, it should be easier to maintain a low nutrient system and thus an SPS appropriate tank with no fish in it. I'd rather deal with trying to add nutrients than trying to remove them. Link to comment
Mr. Microscope
Why not just plumb this tank in with your 180? There should be ample dissolved solids in the water to feed the SPS. Then, you don't have to worry about fish, excess equipment, and your water stability will be a magnitude of 10+x more stable. That is assuming your 180 has a sump to plumb into. Link to comment
krackerjacksna
Dose amino acids would work also Link to comment
Arkayology
You can do it, but long term they will do better with fish poop in the water. Link to comment
