coachtuk
In my 3G pico I have sand all over my rocks. I'm about to start adding corals and I'm wondering if I have too much sand. Sand is everywhere. I put in a 5pm bag of caribbean live in the tank. My flow comes from a ac70 fugue mod. Can I take some sand out? Link to comment
brandon429
sure you can remove some, whatever your liking. some people only use a fine layer of it on the bottom and some use a large layer. they aim the powerheads carefully...can we see pics to see if this is silt or just forceful water motion in the tank? I don't remember having to rinse my carib sea sand, as far as I can remember it was just draining off their packing water and putting it in my bowl. Link to comment

sean151
If I were you, which I'm not, I would take out a substantial amount from the sides. The scape looks cool with the sand like that, but there is a big chance of detritus getting mixed with all that sand on the sides and having it decompose and possibly raise NO3. It's usually recommended under and 1.5" or over 5", or something similar to that or you run the risk of decomposition in aerobic areas. Link to comment
brandon429
oh good for you Im glad to see that pic the tank looks perfect. Based on that snapshot I think you are 95% of the way to getting it how you want. Id siphon out some to level the scape. there appears to be no silting, that's great, its why I recommend this sand always. You can absolutely siphon out another inch or two of sand, sinking the rocks down into a position you like, that's a pretty good load of sand either way is fine, deep or shallow bed if you'll use the water change methods we know works for long term success in a 3 gallon looks really sharp so far, ready for corals man+10! B Thanks. It's amazing how much time and thought I've already put into this. I'm enjoying myself immensely. Your help has been invaluable as has this board. I've done my first big water change and with the ac70 fuge my water is really clear. Link to comment
brandon429
Im very happy to know that. the best thing is that your reef will run so nicely under these conditions, it won't throw a bunch of crazy variables at you like large tanks will really man its a great start all we have to do is keep our fingers crossed that hardware won't let us down im knocking on the wood cabinet that holds my pico as well lol Link to comment
