jonzee2006
First hello I'm new to nano's but not reefing I just recently downgraded to an BC29 from a 120g sps reef. And I've been doing some research on mods for the BC and there are like a trillion of them. I was wondering what the absolute must do mods where for this tank. I'm planning on having another sps dominate tank with some lps here and there. So anything to maximize flow would be great. Also what kind of skimmers are you guys running? I've been considering the tunze 9002, hydor slim skim nano, and the eshopps es75(I think that's the model #) any suggestions would be great. And as always happing reefing Link to comment
boscoT
Welcome to the wonderful world of nano life. I too downgraded from a larger system. I have 2 BC 14s for my kids. The mods are very similar for all BCs however you have some extra room for some upgrades. If I were to get a 29 which I may it would be as follows Chamber 1 heater and possible skimmer but honestly under 30 gal you really don't need a skimmer. Weekly water changes will replace the need for a skimmer Chamber 2 I would say a must have is a media basket from mediabaskets.com. That will take up half of chamber 2. Add filter floss, purigen and chemi pure elite in the media rack. Then right beside you can add a skimmer or better the mediabaskets fuge. Look for the internal submersible lighting for the fuge from media baskets. Chamber 3 your return pump you will add a maxi jet 1200 for the return. Way better flow Don't forget to cut the piece of plastic for extra flow between chamber 1 and 2. I would add a Hydor 425gph power head for extra flow along the right side of the tank Then you can get crazy and upgrade lighting but I really can't help you out with that. Some change lighting, fans etc. That will be a good start Link to comment

But if not what skimmers would you guys recommend. I am probably gonna put a reactor on the back for my chemipure. I have a 150w pendent so lighting won't be a problem. And the plastic piece between chamber 1 and 2 should be cut out or cut down? And I was going to do the MJ1200 for sure. Link to comment
boscoT
You can see video on you tube where they show you how to mod it. If you look at the plastic that divides chamber 1 and 2 you will see a small square piece notched out for water flow. Just tak off the other piece so that the water can flow across the entire section into chamber 2. I don't like small skimmers personally. I don't think that they work all that great. I have read that many have been please with the tunze skimmer. I would still add the media rack. What are you going to use to power the reactor? In this size yank I think you are doing to much personally. Link to comment
Fluffeh
my bc29 goes like this.... chamber 1: nothing chamber 2: mediabasket (filter floss, purigen, chemipure elite) --> fuge basket (with jbj nanoglo LEDs) chamber 3: sponge (to keep out a lot of chaeto from the fuge), maxijet1200, heater display: ecotech mp10 i used to have a skimmer, but i found my corals grow better without one. smai-tai
I too downgraded from a 125 mixed reef to a BC29. I also have the media rack in chamber 2, and could not be more happy with it. There will be some debate about the chemi pure elite and how good it really is, but what isn't debated in this hobby? LOL. I also upgrade my return pump to the Rio 6HF HyperFlow Pump, and added in a Koralia in my tank for added flow. I will be upgrading my lighting from the CFL's to a DIY LED system this weekend or the next. I do own the fuge from media baskets, just have not put it in yet due to not having the light for it. Purplemonkey
My BC29: Chamber 1: jager 100w heater (removed the false floor) -- cut tab between chambers -- Chamber 2: media basket (filterfloss, ROWAphos, carbon atm) + fuge basket with chaeto + submersible light -- left sponge to keep chaeto from getting into chamber 3 -- Chamber 3: MJ900 DT: Hydor 425 nano PH Link to comment

And was thinking of tying the reactor in with return with a Y barb. Ill probably just get a nano skimmer and do more water changes like you suggested this way I can keep its profile clean. This is soooooo different from keeping a bigger system THERE IS NO FREAKING SPACE!!!!!! Lol my bc29 goes like this.... chamber 1: nothing chamber 2: mediabasket (filter floss, purigen, chemipure elite) --> fuge basket (with jbj nanoglo LEDs) chamber 3: sponge (to keep out a lot of chaeto from the fuge), maxijet1200, heater display: ecotech mp10 i used to have a skimmer, but i found my corals grow better without one. What kind of corals are you keeping? I'm planning on a sps dominate tank and from my experience sps benefit a lot from skimming. (Although I'm finding out that a lot of things that I'm used to won't work in the nano world) Link to comment
