altolamprologus
I was at my LFS yesterday and they had just gotten in baby zebra sharks. A guy asked if he could keep one in his 20 gallon tank. WTF? But that's not the end. Other fish in the tank? A foxface. And his solution for when the shark gets too big? Dump it in the SF bay. He saw nothing wrong with putting a tropical shark in 50 degree water. Link to comment

I'm the associate(lol) and I told him there's no way he could keep the shark in the 20 gallon and he would need at least 100 gallons for now and several hundred once it grows bigger. I also told him he shouldn't even have the foxface in a tank that small. He really didn't seem to take me seriously. Link to comment

Some people in this hobby are just not educated and don't care either way what happens to the live stock or anything. Link to comment

I don't even know how that guy has kept the foxface alive(granted he may have only had it for a couple days) Link to comment
Pjanssen
Okay, somebody has to ask this, I'm sure a lot of reefers are thinking it...Why would a fish store even have a shark that can potentially grow to be 8-9 feet long available for sale to hobby reefers. I don't know a lot about sharks, but don't they generally roam hundreds of miles? Just sayin'. Link to comment

And yes some sharks roam hundreds even thousands of miles in the open ocean. But some stay in the same area their whole lives. And Zebras and Leopards are the same aren't they? Link to comment

Pjanssen
"The zebra shark (Stegostoma fasciatum or varium) is a species of carpet shark and the sole member of the family Stegostomatidae. It is found throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, frequenting coral reefs and sandy flats to a depth of 62 m (210 ft). Adult zebra sharks are distinctive in appearance, with five longitudinal ridges on a cylindrical body, a low caudal fin comprising nearly half the total length, and a pattern of dark spots on a pale background. Young zebra sharks under 50–90 cm (20–35 in) long have a completely different pattern, consisting of light vertical stripes on a brown background, and lack the ridges. This species attains a length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft)." "Zebra sharks sometimes cross oceanic waters to reach isolated seamounts.[8] Movements of up to 140 km (87 mi) have been recorded for individual sharks.[8] However, genetic data indicates that there is little exchange between populations of zebra sharks, even if their ranges are contiguous.[9]" From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Link to comment

awpong
Hey guys actually they are actually banded cat sharks, they still grow like 3'6" long, but aren't really active swimmers ^That^ I doubt that it's an ACTUAL "Zebra Shark." Sharks like that grow too rapidly to even consider selling. Not to say that they aren't sold, but I'm willing to wager that it's a simple banded cat shark that has been coined as a zebra shark. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_di...&pcatid=290 Side note: Zebra sharks don't even have stripes... they have spots. Who the hell named them "Zebra?" Link to comment

jm82792
There have a been a bunch of shark sightings at Hapuna beach around here. http://www.bigislandvideonews.com/2011/07/...ch-waialea-bay/ The beach is a big tourist spot, I love the little reef that's a half mile out on the left sand side since the tourists waste time examining sand.
