Alkalinized Kangen Water: OK for a reef tank?

Well my parents have a Kangen water machine. It's a machine that can pump out water with a pH of 8.5, 9.0 and 9.5. I'm using the 8.5 currently.

The water itself has added alkaline levels in it, and my alkalinity level in my tank currently (there's nothing but live rock, sand, and a couple hermits) is around 300-400 ppm. Is this high?

My pH is 8.4. Is this too high also? all other levels are stabilized, and the cycle is complete.

No, not unless its 0 TDS.

The pH is easily buffered with your salt mix so is not a big issue, its the dissolved solids a RO/DI removes that are the what you need.

You might want to show your parents this link:

The "alkaline water" craze is nothing more than a pyramid get rich scheme in most people eyes and has no scientific data to back it up.

Thanks for the link. So my levels should be fine?

AZDesertRat: even if Kangen water isn't real, my alkalinity and pH levels are much higher than they were previously.

Alkalinity and pH are only two of the minor ingredients in the water and easily taken care of. No, the water is not fine, you have done absolutely nothing to remove the TDS or dissolved contaminants in the water. The pH and alkalinity can be taken care of with the salt mix or buffers, removing the contaminants is the challenge and not capable of being removed with anything other than distillation (expensive) or RO/DI which is quite economical at less than a nickel per gallon on average.

I could have sworn (although it's probably not right), that Kangen water machines remove almost all of the TDS from the tap water...

Actually you couldn’t  be more wrong . All of the science is proven and documented. Plenty of scientific data and some of the top doctors in the world support Kangen water . They have proven that technology with human trials as well . This doctor was the head of those

Are you a doctor or a scientist yourself , or an aquarium owner ? What credibility do you have for anyone to take you opinion seriously? Maybe you should check this link out as well. Documentation beats conversion.

The filter that comes with the machine may not remove all TDS . A nice pre filtration system may be required. I bought one for my machine only cost me a couple hundred bucks . There are cheaper .

So, aside from the fact that you apparently made an account to dig up a thread that's 8 years old, I'm not exactly enthusiastic about this whole "alkaline water" thing. Looks like the most it's likely to do for you is lower your stomach acidity a little bit, which can help with reflux but can also make you much more vulnerable to infection. Any changes that people see when they drink it are likely due to them drinking more water than they usually would, because they like the taste.
