P.S. I noticed the other day that LED-HK's eBay store is totally cleaned out.

Totally pissed about this because I was literally trying to place another order for bulbs for 2 of my other builds that I'm working on right now...and I started out with the 4x1w and that's what I'm looking for...so if anyone knows of another seller with them w/ 60* optics available...please pm me and let me know.

I have a few 4x1w here at the house in blue i think.

if you order the 3x1 from the last seller i got them from i will trade you when you get them :)

Mail would be quick from NY to NH to make the trade

Hi guys

Quickly need some advice.

Building a pico and would just want to know how many gu10 bulbs I would need.

Display area 35cm x 20cm x 20cm.

Are there still sellers o ebay selling them with 60 degree optics, can't find any.

regards

with a pico i would take the optics right off and epoxy the leds to the heatsink shrouds

I would do 5 bulbs. 3 blue and 2 white.

with the optics off you will get a good blend.

Thanks Tiny that would make it easier to find.

I plan to have them mounted 3 inches above the tank. Would I still be Ok removing the optics?

Should be fine

as far as epoxy you need thermal epoxy. i think there is a link at the bottom of the first post for the amazon listing for thermal epoxy

I emailed led-hk and they said they were "on holiday" til Jan. 27th/28. Wanted to share the good news.

I'd probably avoid building an array with bulbs from China or HK since Chinese New Year is around the corner. Usually it's a few weeks long.

I just finished a build for my 30x12x6 frag tank. I decided on a composite fence post and end caps for the fixture. The white vinyl posts and end caps were on clearance so I went with that. The Trex would have looked good but I was on a budget. I used a scrap of acrylic to mount the sockets. I wired the blues seperate from the whites and did this pattern wbbwbbwbbw. I didn't want the white vinyl look so I took a bottle torch to it. It hangs off of yo-yos so it can be adjusted to any height easily.

Most of these Blue do not list colour spectrum. In general are the Blue lights listed producing Actinic lighting?

I am considering GU10 bulbs for my 2gallon Pico. I will need a classy way to mount them though.

yeah blue light is actinic.

the higher the nm value the bluer the light. so 460 i think is ideal most of them dont list the nm values. but i have bulbs from many different dealers and they all have been working great. and most of the sellers havent listed the wavelength values.

Funny question...

Short answer: Yes.

Longer Answer: In our field, Actinic actually refers to a lamp with a 403nm peak, so no most of these blue bulbs don't claim a 403nm peak.

Better Answer? The term "actinic" has been abstracted a bit over time so now it refers generically to any blueish photosynthetic light. 450-460nm is all I've ever seen claimed by the GU10 manufacturers - which matches fairly well with the "Royal Blue" aka "Super Actinic" colors people like today in their T5 and LED lamps anyway. Check out page five (5) of Cree's XR-E promo sheet for some example charts.

Also, if you know anything about Photosynthetically Active Radiation, you might also realize that this spectrum covers a nice chunk blue end of the PAR curve. If you can add some Actinic 03, "UV" or any lower band LED's (specialist vendors like Ecoxotic have some....others too, I'm sure), it might still be of some additional benefit in color and coral growth. Likewise in terms of more "purple" or "violet" lights. The emitters are easy to find, but I haven't seen any of these specialty colors integrated into a GU10 fixture yet.

Wikipedia:

Par_action_spectrum.gif

And for reference (thinking about how best to fill that curve above!) I just found this amazing site that has dozens of spectrographs of common (and some not so common) light sources. I can't immediately tell who the site is by, but I stumbled to it from here, by finding their linked Craig Johnson page dead and then hitting Google. ;-)

the last seller i purchased fro actually listed the bulbs as 460-470nm and they are a really nice rich blue color. some of the other bulbs purchased are definitely lighter.. like a shade or two below windex. but they still get the actinic response to the color.. which is what we are really looking for when we add the blues to the tanks anyways.

Just to add a little as far as the wavelengths offered. I had emailed seller luckdzl wondering if they have red and violet gu10 bulbs available, which they do. They stated that they have GU10 3X1W UV 420 nm chip led bulbs and GU10 3X1W red 660nm chip led bulbs available. Not sure about the violets (although they seem to fit in the perfect photo range), but considering adding 2 reds to my build for some extra pop.

i've never seen what the red would do the the lighting.. what color does it make the tank look?

do things respond to the red lighting? will it grow more algae?

Link to comment

The red and blue will give a purplish hue, similar to a fiji purple t5. Red brings out the reds and purples. They will over power if too many are used, so 1 or 2 is all that is needed. Not sure about algae growth, but again you wont be using too many.
