d0lph1n Posted March 16, 2011 Share Posted March 16, 2011 Is nitrate an issue for FW? I didn't think it was.. it can cause problems with some coral. Xenia loves dirty water. Not tryin to be a hater, I just don't know much about FW. (I also don't have any opposition to running a canister as long as you know and are ok with the necessary maintenance.) IMO, No3 should be zero in any proper filtration system especially in a planted tank. The media I've been using in my filers is claiming: "These macropores are ideally sized for the support of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. This allows Matrix™, unlike other forms of biomedia, to remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite, simultaneously and in the same filter..." Lets say No3 is not removed completly by the denitrifying bacteria but it will be removed by macro algae. Anyway, I'm new to reefing. I'm glad that Xenia loves dirty water cuz I like Xenia.
