Carbon doesn't really take calcium (or any other ions) out of solution. Carbon is used to remove dissolved organics from water. Link to comment

Previous comment is totally true. As for the "nutrients", a reactor with good quality carbon is going to take them out (dissolved organics etc...), quick. The impact of carbon is very high when it is fresh and then quickly reduces to a much lower effectiveness. Still worth it to leave it in there for a week or two if it is just regular maintenance, but know that your water is going to be super clean soon after adding it and then slowly getting dirty again while it is running.
