grayefox
Hey everyone Im kinda new to the hobby(one yr so far) and this is by far and away the most informative site out there. I have a question about my filtration. I have a 24g nano cube. My current filtration is. Chamber 1: sponge(cleaned very regularly) carbon, chemi-pure, purigen. Chamber 2: live rock rubble. Chamber 3: return pump. So my question is: IS there a better way to have this setup? What could I add/take away to make it better? Thanks in advance for any feedback Link to comment
StevieT
Ditch the sponge, ditch the bioballs. Look into this for chamber one to house your media. Use filter floss on top to catch detritus. chamber two can be used for a fuge or skimmer. Link to comment
grayefox
I have no bioball I want to use floss but it seems so wasteful just throwing it out after a few days. Is a skimmer overkill if I change water on a regular basis? Link to comment
StevieT
Filter floss is dirt cheap and the best way to reduce the risk of nitrates vs a sponge. You do not need a skimmer, they do help but water changes are key Link to comment
grayefox
What about purigen chemi pure and carbon? Is that overkill? me second chamber is almost filled to the top with LR rubble is that too much? Should I take some out and maybe put some cheato on the top? Im not worried about the expense of floss the creating needless garbage Link to comment
brandolando4
From what I have read every where ever you should ditch the rubble it's awesome at first but supposedly collects detritus extremely well and is hard to clean, it will eventually aid in the creation of nitrates, if I was u I wouldmslowly start taking out the rubble and add a massive pile of chaeto!! Its really cheap and is really beneficiary not only for it's nitrate and phosphate consumption but pods like to live in it Link to comment

Im not worried about the expense of floss the creating needless garbage Purigen and chemi pure elite are good, carbon would be overkill and does not last nearly as long as the others. LR rubble is the same as bioballs, take them out. If you want a fuge just do that, no rubble. The floss is already produced and will safely be housed in a landfill after your use where it will be greatly compressed. Link to comment
grayefox
Sorry to bother you but what do I do with the rubble now? And would having all that purigen carbon and chemi pure lead to coral bleaching? I have frogspawn that recently lost its green colour. I upgraded my lights to led and do regular water changes? StevieT
Purigen and chemi pure will not bleach your corals. Link to comment
grayefox
Ok what would be the cause of it then? Link to comment
jojoe972
just IMO.... not properly acclimating the coral to your light or heating issues Link to comment
StevieT
+1 to the increased light Link to comment
