nebthet
I noticed tonight, after doing some cleaning of the powerheads, and mp20 that I have a strange smell coming from my water. When the lights came on today, I noticed the xenia was pretty po'd and hadn't expanded it's fully and so was my pocci. So I decided to do a little maintenance as it was due but only a couple weeks early. Once the power heads were cleaned (vinegar and water, then rinsed in water again), I decided to switch out the chemipure x2 bags and change the phosguard. I noticed when I put my nose near the tank I would smell this smell that is very similar to electrical, but isn't. At first I thought it was coming from my lights, but I took them down and pressed my nose right up to them, turning them on and off and wiped off any salt creep that might have been on there. The smell wasn't coming from the lights. Therefore, the next thing I did was put my nose to the tank and that seems to be where it is coming from.. Now I have had my hands in and out of the tank water all day, there was no strange feeling, no tingling, no jolts so I know it isn't stray voltage, so I am wondering what exactly is causing the smell. I am making more RO water today to do a waterchange tomorrow/later today seeing how it is early morning.. and I am going to be watching to see how the corals react to that. The fish down seem to be bothered at all, and there is something strange going on in the tank that is killing all my clams.. I have a third one in the process of dying and would remove it except my BTA is attached to it and refuses to let go and I don't want to damage that, so I know I have a water change coming then too. Does any one have any ideas what may be causing the smell? Link to comment
GokesReef
Hmm.. what does electricity smell like? Honestly can't guess, lol As for the smell - does it smell like the ocean? Because you've got a small ocean in there. I notice the fishy smell from time to time in my tank, replacing carbon will usually take care of it (if you haven't recently). Carbon gets pretty much any funky smell or other oddities in the water out of there, IME. However, I'm not sure a mini ocean smelling like the ocean can be considered an oddity. If you're smelling something different and have replaced your carbon in the last month or whatever, then I'm out of ideas! Link to comment
