GrantM3
Just purchased some live rock for my 27g marineland tank and would like help to identify this plant/algae. He had a 55g trash can full of live rock and most of it had this stuff on it. Do I need to go ahead and scrub it off or continue my cycle with it in there and just end up getting a CuC to take care of it? ( I did some searching it from what it looks like its a Bryosis and an emerald or tuxedo urchin will mow it down... possibly a lawnmower/sailfin blenny) EDIT: Tank has only had the LR in it for 3 days. Substrate and water have been in for about 10 days. Link to comment
Dnic
That stuff looks pretty wicked, you should take out the affected pieces and dry them out for a few weeks. Link to comment
GrantM3
Depends if it is beneficial or not... mind you what ever it is it was able to grow w/o any light and is only one ONE side of the rock. Why would I remove a piece for WEEKS that doesn't make any sense lol Link to comment
Dnic
Even if it's beneficial, do you still want a huge piece of grass in the middle of your tank? Take it out and boil it and throw it back in a few days later. I personally use a blow torch and just burn it off. Or you could keep it and see what happens Link to comment
GrantM3
Can I get a professional ID on this stuff and see if I need to scrub it off or let a CuC pick at it. It is very plant like and is on one side of my large rock and covers half of the little one i put on top. If it's beneficial, do you still want a huge piece of ugly grass in the middle of your tank? Take it out and boil it and throw it back in a few days later Its not in the Middle of my tank its only on one side which is facing towards the back... I might go ahead and scrub out the little rock. ( I have it for a refugium later) Yea... I think I'll wait for a professional opinion. blow torch.... really man cmon... Link to comment
GrantM3
here is a better up close picture of it. Link to comment
TheMac86
Looks like Cladophoropsis, but I am not definite on that identification. Try looking up photos of that and matching it to what you have. It looks close to me but tell me your opinion. Link to comment

paneubert
Post this in the ID forum... http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showforum=24 or the Macro Algae forum... http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showforum=65 .....and you might get a better answer. I personally have no clue but anything that looks close to that type of thing you have is a nuisance algae to me. Is it soft or hard? Looks sort of like turf algae to me. Turf = bad. Edit: I see that you did post other places. Good thinking. And a blowtorch does work as well Link to comment

Ok posted it in the ID forum hopefully that goes well If not i'll try to get a MOD to move it into the macro one! Looks like Chaetomorpha Linum I thought it was a Chaeto of some sort as well but if you look close it seems to be branching out. Link to comment

GrantM3
That's where a blow torch comes into play (Scraping doesn't work) OH LORD! NOT THE FAT BOY! lol... If it comes down to it I've also read about h202 (hydrogen peroxide) dipping... since I don't have any corals I will give it a shot if I don't see an improvement w/ a 3 days lights out method. Thanks guys! Link to comment
GokesReef
Toss CuC in and see if they eat it.. if your system is low in nutrients, as it should be, the algae shouldn't be able to grow anyway. Link to comment

I'll do this but I'm going to wait 2 more weeks as my tank was just setup at the beginning of this month. Know of anywhere to get a good CuC package besides liveaquaria? As much as i'd like to spend locally I cant see spending over +100$ on a CuC when I can get a package deal for ~50$. Link to comment

GokesReef
RC is good, hopefully shipping is cheap to you.. as much as I hate to say it, spending $60 ($30 for the pack + $30 to ship) is tough when you can get the same things at petco for just a little more each but no shipping. Though, I'm sure John would rather not deal with the small orders to begin with Link to comment

Wrong attitude when approaching a hobbyist forum that isn't staffed by 'professionals' to provide free advice for your benefit. The blow torch is a common method used because it spot heats areas of rock that may contain filaments of the algae that can come back after the CUC eats it. Look at it this way, even if you wanted a known beneficial algae species, nearly everyone doesn't want it in the main display unless you think it's better to have an algae that grows without lights on, which will easily out compete corals in your tank.
