Neon Reef Lighting

Has anyone tried it? I doubt you could pull much usefull par out standard neon lights but with the wide variety of vibrant (neon) colors it seems like aesthetically they could have an impact on coral coloration.

I think im going to shine a few neon lights i have over my tank and see how bright they turn out and see if there is a color difference. If anyone wants to join in on the experiment post here.

interesting thought, as long as we are thinking outside the box cold cathode (copier scanning light) could also be interesting as they are similar technology

i think neon produces something like 200 lumen per foot in white but i dont know how that would translate into color like you are talking about

Found some cool stuff, didnt know these were so expensive?

Other stuff i found was pretty useless, http://www.iloveneon.com/category.asp?c=17

This is pretty usefull however, http://www.nofs.navy.mil/about_NOFS/staff/cbl/neon.html

It seems like you would need at least around 15 feet of 12mm neon tubing to be as bright as a 48" t5 based purely on lumen ratings, correct me if im wrong.

For aesthetic purposes however you might not need to be as bright as your main lighting source. I would also just like to see how corals react to neon. For instance, 20k halide doesnt look the same as 20k of t5 or LED, so i would like to see what happens under neon, argon, krypton, xenon, noble gasses etc... it seems the color choices are endless and can be seperated in the same tube for tons of combinations. ____________
