BioCube 29 Setup Question

Hopefully I'm posting in the right place....

I'm brand new to this, and I'm trying to setup my BioCube.

The first part of assembly shows the filter cartridge running parallel to the back wall.

The slot it goes in actually runs parallel to the side walls.

I'm assuming I either have an outdated tank, or outdated manual.

Also, which way would the filter face? Plastic side toward right or left?

Thanks!

Hopefully you do not have water in it yet as it will make the mods easier when the tank is empty. As mentioned above step one: read the resource guide. Click the banner at the bottom of my post and it will take you right to it. Happy Reefing! :D

Yep. No water.

It's going to be a bit til I get live rock and live sand.

So it sounds like the first thing to do is put a skimmer in chamber 1 :o)

What!? That's definatly not the first thing you should do and some will suggest no skimmer. Keep reading.

First things to do:

1. Bioballs, sponge, stock filter OUT

2. Remove false floors in chamber one and two. Just pull up for the one in chamber two and you'll have to push down hard on a corner for the one in chamber one with a blunt object (eg: flathead screwdriver)

3. Cut tab between chamber one and two for more flow

And +1 for inTank!

Skimmer could wait for a little while if you keep up on your water changes. Removing the bioballs and replacing the stock pump with a MaxiJet 1200 would be a good place for you to start.

I was able to remove the floor in chamber 1 and get all the residue off the wall.

I then proceeded to remove the balls and remove the floor in Chamber 2.

Things are starting to shape up :)

I was looking at the MaxiJet 1200, and the 1100 utility caught my eye.

Anyone have an experience with it? Seems to have some slight differences, possibly quieter.

Thanks, Mike.

Hey Mike,

I just set up my freebie 29gal BioCube the other day. The resource guide is your friend. I took out the old Bio balls and placed some chemi pure and filter floss in there for now. My heater I put in chamber 1 after I tore out a section of the false floor big enough to accommodate it. I still have the stock pump but will upgrade it to the maxi jet series. Not sure if I'll go 900 or 1200 though. I use a 1200 for the GFO on my 72 gal bow front. Water went in about 5 days ago along with long dead Pukani from BRS. Ammonia yesterday was 4 so cycle has started. I plan on cutting the section between 1 and 2. Not sure if I will add a skimmer (more noise, it's in my lucky daughters bedroom). Will most likely build the LED kit from RapidLED and replace the lights.

Good luck! While lurking, I have found this site to be very helpful. Keep us updated.

The 1100 ($48) is a lot more than the 1200 ($22). The 1200 is pretty quiet so that's not really a selling point. The 1200 is more or a multi-use power head where the 1100 is strictly a pump. Either one would be good.
