So this is my first go 'round at saltwater... I've been doing my research for the last few weeks and finally decided to take the pluge (fingers crossed). This is a Fluval Chi with a modded AC70, dual 18w Coralife 50/50 over the tank and the LED's that came with the Chi over the fuge. Earlier today I added 7lb of live sand and 7lb of live rock both from an established tank. I aslo put a softball sized ball of chaeto in the AC70, but wondering if I jumped the gun on that after stumbling upon a post advising against it. I just noticed a little starfish cruising the glass, any opinions if the cycle will kill it or not? Any advice will be much appreciated!!!

Welcome to NR!

The starfish you saw on your glass is probably an asterina star, they can get way out of hand, I would advise plucking it out.

Never heard that before. I have plenty of asterina stars in my tank and i've had the rock that they started on for 2 years now. Never got out of had or had any problems. I wouldn't care about the star too much when you first start out w/ a tank half the fun is watching all the little critters that came in on the rock.

The stars look cool when they're splitting off.

I suppose if it could go either way I may just leave it, the kids really got a kick out of it! I just want what's best for the system.

Besides chaeto and filter floss, what else do I really need in my AC 70? I've been doing some searching here but can't find a deffinative answer. Is it just personal preference?

That is about all you will ever get here. That is what this is for to give personal experiance. What works for some will not work for others. Read all you can and then you have to decide for your self what you can handle. For now I think you will be fine with what you have for the ac70 but you may want to look into a HOB skimmer if you are planning a large bio load. Also think about adding a power head.

Thanks for the info! The powerhead is another thing that seems to go both ways. Why do you suggest one? The flow seems to be pretty good at the front of the tank but not so much in the rear. Also, the flow seems to be more of a 'tumbling' movement as it stands now (flows down in the front, up in the back).

The powerhead will help with making sure there are no dead spots in the tank where stuff will settle and then you will have problems with cyno on the sand bed. Also depending on what coral you want to keep you may need it for them to make sure they all are getting good flow. With the powerhead you also can make a much more turbulent flow and that will help you filter work. Keeps things suspended in the water column longer.

Yeah, I've noticed a dead spot behind some of the rock and decided to do some rearranging to help mitigate that. I will deffinately look into getting a powerhead too. Do you suppose a koralia nano would be sufficient?

That is what I have in my cad22 and it works great.
