oldmanbassoon
My astrea snails keep climbing up the output of my protien skimmer and onto the outside of the skimmer where there's no water. I keep putting them back into the water when I see them up there but today I found a dead one there. Do astrea snails (or other marine snails for that matter) die if they're not in water. If so, why are they doing this? Are they predispositioned to be retarded or am I doing something wrong? Link to comment
danielmparker
is your home hot? my snails used to do that in the summer when it got hot in the tank room, they would climb up and out sometimes, when the tank got to like 80 or so Link to comment
br3nt1988
lol there snails they just go as they plz they just start climing and they end up outside the tank and there not smart enough to turn around and go the other way . now im not sure if they can live outside water im guessing not but what i do no is that if they fall on there back they cant get them selves back over so they die it happens quite a bit in tanks when theres not a lot of reef being there reef snails in there natural environment most times there's enough rocks or whatever so they can just reach out and grab something with their foot. but yea id just trow some soft screen like netting over the top and tape it down with electrical tap somthing that wont leave all the sticky gunk on your tank. Formula462
i put little random pieces of LR rubble in areas of my tank that are more wide open sand just so the snails have more stuff to stretch for. i've had a few in the past that ended up having zoas spread onto them. Link to comment
GokesReef
The only time I've seen this is when the tank temp was too high.. friend's snails wouldn't stay in the water until it was brought down. I think it was sitting around 86* or so, new light fixture. Link to comment
pismo_reefer
Snails only jump when there's something wrong... Starfish do it, too.... Ask me how I know. Link to comment
jeff@zina.com
Agreed to there being an issue. My snails only climb out with the temp over 83F or so and they'll climb if nitrates are high too (added cleanup crew too early...). Jeff Link to comment
