fattail95
Hi there guys! I have recently purchased these two items below to power a coralife 50 50, and I need to know how to wire them. The power cord has two wires and so does the socket. The question is, which ones go where? Thanks! Link to comment

fattail95
Does it matter which wires go to which? As you can see on the socket it has two wires, black and white, on the cord it has two wires, does it matter which way I hook them up or can I just put the wires on either way? Link to comment
Chutsk10
I'm pretty sure it is not going to matter which one goes where. Link to comment
tundrashaul
White wire on the socket should go to the ribbed wire on the cord if standard. Your neutral (white) is the left slot when looking at the receptacle, just follow the prong. Link to comment
tundrashaul
Incandescent will work either way, but it comes down to a serious safety issue. Link to comment

Assuming the ground is on the bottom of the electrical outlet you're looking at. For the lamp, it makes no real difference, for your own safety, follow this advice whenever you wire something up. Jeff True; but in this case it makes no difference as by the look of that plug, it is two prong only and can be inserted in the socket either way round. Link to comment

jeff@zina.com
So i can wire it any way round? You can. But you really should try to get the hot/neutral correct, as posted. Jeff True; but in this case it makes no difference as by the look of that plug, it is two prong only and can be inserted in the socket either way round. If it's a current extension cord, it should be polarized and fit in the outlet only one way. You can thank the electronics industry for that. Jeff Link to comment
pweissma
It makes a big difference in terms of safety. If the threads are wired hot then there is a good chance of electrocution when screwing the bulb in or out. I'm very glad the op had the sense to ask. Excuse me for sounding smug but someone who doesn't know this very basic element of wiring probably doesn't know some other critical stuff such as how to make a secure connection. Link to comment
fattail95
I am doing a course in Electronics at school, I know an awful lot about building curcuits and wiring, but 99% of my experience is in DC... Link to comment
pweissma
It's an easy diy project but you need to know a bit about high voltage wiring. There are plenty of resources online. Link to comment
