so i did a 1/3 water change today..salinty was perfect..temp was same as in tank..my damsels died..and all inverts are perfectly fine..crabs running around eating like they normally do...snails fine..the only thing i did diffrent was change to a diffrent brand of salt..what happened? nothing spiked..levels are good. damsels were dead about 20 mins after water change.

Sometimes changing salt brands shocks things. It is usually a good idea to do much smaller water changes when switching brands. Maybe that is why they died. Who knows though.

By the way it sounds I dont think that the fish death had anything to do with the wc. The shrimp would die first if you did something wrong. Another thing is how long did you have the fish.

maybe it was just his time.... fish especially damsels are very resilient water changes if everything is correct shouldn't wouldn't kill 1

Ph: 8.2

nitrite: 0

nitrate:0

temp:78

ammonia: between 0 and .25

salinity: 1.022

i dont care that much about the damsels dieing, i just want to try and keep this problem from happening again...and i dont understand why my inverts are fine. heater failed two nights ago and temp dropped to 72-74..

i went from instant ocean synthetic to Coralife...

had fish 2 weeks

what i found weird was it was 2 damsels who died..not just one

If you only had the fish 2 weeks, it is hard to figure what actually killed them. Could have just been sick to begin with and it was either a coincidence that they died after the change or they were weakened already and the water change just was too much to handle.

I don't know what happened... Damsels are pretty hardy and can withstand bad water params for a little while... could have stirred up the sand bed and released some sulfur gas...

Pro-tip: Slowly raise that SG up to 1.026 for a reef tank

Wouldn't that sulfur mess with his inverts also?

yeah they could have been sick already, but like others said each salt is different, different elements, different ph and other things, so just changing the brands of salt could have been enough of a shock to kill them.
