tolissa
I just bought a new bike and I wanted to know if many of you are into cycling? I'm KIDDING. My tank, after 10 days, has shown no ammonia spike. The live rock had been in the store for 10 days, and got to my girlfriends tank very quickly. What I want to know is this. Is it worth forcing a spike by adding ammonia, should I wait for a spike to occur, or should I just get some inverts then corals then fish? Oh, and no I'm not burying a dead fish. (Tank is 34L/10G, Water is bought seawater, water parameters are 0 amm., 0 Nitri., 0 Nitra. PH is 7.9-8.1) Thanks heaps guys! Link to comment
jeff@zina.com
I'm KIDDING. My tank, after 10 days, has shown no ammonia spike. Is there a source of ammonia? Some flake food added to the tank will decompose, starting your cycle. Jeff Link to comment
GokesReef
The live rock had been in the store for 10 days What does that mean? What's in your tank now? If you have good LR and bought the bagged live sand, you probably won't have a cycle. Are you seeing diatoms? You're probably good to add a few snails/hermits. Just make sure they have something to eat.. if there are no diatoms or algae, they may need a couple little flakes. Should be able to do a fish in a week or two depending on how you answer the first 2 questions. Link to comment

Hey Xris, when I bought the Liverock, it had been shipped to the store 10 days ago and was sitting under light and 3 powerheads with other liverock whilst in the store. I don't know about diatoms but the tank is remarkably clean, and we haven't cleaned it. Jeff I don't have a source of ammonia, I hadn't considered food. As I understood, the ammonia spike part of the cycle came from the death occurring on the liverock during transporting. So I understand that I can add snails and hermits with some food, or just add some food, and this should start at least a mini cycle to make sure the biological filtration will take place? As for diatoms, I don't know, the photo shows all of the algae type stuff in the tank. Thanks heaps guys! Link to comment
