Backwerds Man
So I've got some rock that was once live, by is now dried out and dead. I'm aware that dropping this right into my tank will cause a cycle to some extent. So my question is, what is a good way to make this stuff tank ready in a reasonable amount of time. I've read of people keeping them in SW tubs/buckets for 6-8 months, and that just seems kinda crazy, to me at least. Also, we are talking about maybe 3lbs of rock going into a fully established 20L with 10lbs of live rock in it already. The tank is great, everything stays at zero and I still do my weekly WC's. So I guess my questions are... Do I need to worry about such a small amount of rock causing problems with my tank? Assuming that answer is yes, is there a quicker procedure to get this rock tank ready? Thanks, Chris Link to comment
markandstaci
You probably won't have any issues just adding it directly to your tank. Your existing LR should be able to process any nitrogen released from the dead rock. It is kind of like adding a couple of fish... you already have the biological capacity for nitrogen processing, it only has to "ramp up" a little bit to deal with the increased production. vresor
Dead rock will pretty quickly become live rock. I used about 90% dead rock in my Solana build and just a few lumps of live rock from my BC14 colonized the whole reef. Took a while though. Link to comment
Backwerds Man
Cool. Maybe I will just give it a good pressure rinsing, and a lil scrub then plop them in. I may even just put one in, wait a day, test, and then put the other in. Link to comment
JBM
if it's been good & dead for a while, shake it in some ro water (to get dirt off) & add directly to your established tank. everything will be fine Link to comment
