stupid ro system question

I have my ro hooked into my main water supply then to a float valve can I keep it on all the time? I just set up my system and held the float valve close and the di filled up then it started making a kind of humming so I decided it was a bad idea without more knowledge. Please help. Thanks for your time.

Does your system have an auto shut off? In addition to the float valve the system needs an auto shut off valve to stop the flow of supply water to the membrane. When the float closes pressure builds up in the product line and closes the supply line.

Looks like this:

yes the float switch is so you can leave it on

the valve that actually shuts the water off needs to have a certain pressure build up before it completely cuts the water, thats the humming noise you hear is the pressure building. it'll take up to a minute or so before the water actually completely stops flowing.

if it doesn't have an autoshutoff valve then the float switch won't work, the water pressure will just force it from closing all the way

but you do have a valve, its the thing in the middle of your pic with two red and two blue tubes connected to it.

No. If you don't have an autoshutoff valve the waste line will continue to run to waste but the good water will stop.

You do have an autoshutoff valve (ASOV) in the photo so you are fine. Once the float raises the good flow should shut off fairly quick but the waste may take a few minutes, this is normal. If it does not shut off you may have air in the membrane housing or lines which can be released by picking the RO/DI unit up and rotating it around in all different orientations to release trapped air. If that does not work you may need either a check valve next to the ASOV or possibly a small bladder tank to act as a cushion for positive shutoff.
