I know I am a bit late on this one Hype but I am so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful fish and I would have been crushed.

I hope everything else in the tank is doing well, and if you ever do decide to do a "TEST" shipment I would be very willing to be the guinea pig! ;)

Sorry to hear about the clown. She was beautiful.

Hype, how do u keep ur sand so clean? I have been having problems with nitrates and was thinking the sand bed may be the problem. It is 2" and has been undisturbed for a year. I have a few nassarius snails, but the sand is lookin a bit shabby. Was thinking of a diamond goby to keep it nice and clean. What do u think?

First off I'm sorry to hear about your recent loss, but glad to hear the male is doing well.

I just recently joined NR but have been following this tank for nearly a year now and it has ben a huge inspiration to me for my current build

The key to keeping a white sand bed is low nutrients. If you can keep your nitrates at 0 and your phosphates around 0.02 it inhibits nuisance algae growth.Strong Varied flow helps prevent detritus from settling on the sandbed. It also helps to vacuum the sandbed every now and then to stir up any trapped detritus.

Hey thanks for the info. I believe my problem is that my sand bed is leaching nitrates, as it is only 1.5-2" and has been more or less undisturbed for over a year. Do you ever stir or vacuum your sand bed? What animals do you have stirring it? I have a few nassarius snails, but it seems there is only so much they can do. That's why I was considering the sand-sifting goby. Seems like in getting the goby you lose most/all micro fauna in your sand bed, but in return, your sand gets stirred up, which doesn't allow nitrates and phosphates to accumulate in the sandbed. Seems like most people online think that in a nano the sandbed isn't much of a filter to begin with, so the addition of the goby is worth it. Curious to see what you think or if you have any other ideas for my problem. Thanks Hype!

Yep i vacuum my sand or at least portions of it weekly. I dont have much of a cuc anymore i mostly have alot of spaghetti worms but they dont contribute much to keeping the sandbed clean. The problem with trying a sand sifting goby is you likely wont have enough microfauna to keep it well fed so ensure that it eats frozen/pellets before purchasing or you'll risk starving it to death. In short if you want clean sand vacuum it often, dont overfeed, keep nutrients low and maintain great flow

K. I'll probly pass on the goby. This is probably a dumb question, but, I've never done it before so...what's the best way to vacuum the sand? I read somewhere u stir the whole thing up then give it 15-20 mins to settle, then use gravel vac to suck detritus off the top. Sound good?

You could use a gravel vacuum like this. Personally I use a turkey baster to siphon up sections of the sandbed and deposit it in a small container. Then i use tank water to rinse the collected sand. I basically just rinse and repeat until the water filters clear and redeposit it in the tank. Takes some time but once you get a rhythm its not too bad.
