rhino79 Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I recently set up a 29g Biocube, and I now have my LR curing in the tank. Before I placed the rock in my tank, I dipped each piece in a hypersaline bath for a bit to evacuate any hitchhikers, but I now realize that many of them (crabs, shrimp, worms, etc.) stayed attached. A few days ago I noticed a pair of tiny eyes staring at me from a hole in the rock. I read that a brief freshwater dip could make a mantis shrimp jump out of the rock, so I took the rock to the kitchen, and, lo and behold, a small mantis shrimp did a cliff dive onto my kitchen floor. This one was fairly small, about an inch long or so. He was a feisty little bugger... like an overgrown sea monkey on crack. While I was lucky with that one, I'm fairly certain there are a few more in my tank. My question is: If I can't find the others, will mantis shrimp this small pose a considerable threat to a FOWLR tank? Should I do everything possible to trap the others before I put in any fish? I would feel pretty crappy if one of these guys killed a fish. Also, any methods on how to get the rest of them would be appreciated.
kthehun89 Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I think you're under the impression that a 1" mantis is an OJ equivalent...in general only really large mantis eat fish. mostly it's your CUC that will be eaten. dont trip
