Still-A-Newb Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 I have that media basket/fuge set up from InTank in the back of my 29g biocube and within a week my chaeto died. I got the chaeto from Gulf Coast Systems and they told me to keep a 6500k daylight bulb on it, but was that enough light to go through the glass of the biocube and plastic thickness of the fuge basket?? Yes the paint is scraped of the back of the cube. Could the chemi-pure elite have killed it? I did notice some brown film in the water all over in the back of that chamber, is the chemi-pure supposed to leak out of the bag like that??
Ferrari_Jones Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 How old is your tank? If it was still cycling that could have killed it. Do you have any pics? If it was deprived of light it would look clear.
RussianBoy Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 chemi-pure won't kill it, did you rinse the chemi-pure before adding it to your media basket? how long do you have the light on the cheato?
Still-A-Newb Posted November 9, 2010 Author Posted November 9, 2010 I have the light on it all the time. When it arrived it was in one tightly packed ball, now it has all fallen apart and turning white. Tank has been running for over a year now. Would the pods eat it or was the light just not stong enough?? Yes I did rinse the chemi-pure before I put it in.
RussianBoy Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 it's best to run the light on the reverse light cycle, when your tank lights are on it's off also pods won't eat it, they live to reproduce in it, did you pull it a part a bit when you got it? when it's really tightly packed it will not filter as well. I use a 13w PC light for mine and it grows like crazy, however are your nitrate levels always at 0? cause cheato needs some nitrates to live....
idrm350 Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 If your water is really clean it won't grow and may start to die, which is what yours is doing.
Mark Peterson Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 If your water is really clean it won't grow and may start to die, which is what yours is doing. I agree. I would not be surprised that the use of Chemi-pure caused the Chaeto's demise. In 15 years in this hobby, I have never found much use for Chemi-Pure except for cleaning up the odd pollution that comes when old dead LR is re-used.
