My local fish store is selling there old used wet/dry filter for $175.00. that includes the filter, plumbing. sponges, bioballs, overflow box. Only thing it doesn't have is the return pump. I was thinking of using it as a sump and installing a skimmer also. Is it worth it?

sponges, bioballs filter all set off my nitrate alarms.

If its just a long rectangular box to hold sump stuff why not get a standard rectangle tank for much cheaper and call it a day?

I agree... the Petco dollar per gallon sale is still going in most places - you could get a tank and use that as a sump for much less. I don't see the point in spending that kind of money for something that a normal tank can do better.
