Got a bunch of free frags

I've labeled all the pictures to keep things in order a bit... Need ID on all frags, and recommendations of placement. I used a little glue and putty on some, but can move them if necessary.

Equipment-

29BC HQI

Koralia 2

Maxijet 1200 with hydor rotating diffuser/wavemaker

I have a bunch of skeletons in there from when I first got LR, which will be removed when I feel the time is right, and I'm sure there's no regrowth. One skeleton appears to have something growing back, see pics and tell me if you can ID from the way the skeleton looks.

Frag "A" is some sort of yellow thing attached to a snail shell.

Frag "B" ate some frozen mysis shrimp after settling in for a few hours...

Frag "C" looks like some sort of tight brain...

Frag "D" is just a tiny radioactive green thing that is growing out of a skeleton... Maybe you guys can tell what it may be by the shape of the skeleton it's on...?

Frag "E"... some sort of brain...

Frag "F" looks like some kind of brain too....

I've got a sebae anemone in there who's been wandering a bit, so I've tried to avoid putting any of the coral low in the tank. Most of the skeletons on the left side will be taken out eventually to seed my BC14 when I can set it up.

Thanks for any help!

A. Too small, maybe a leather or something..?

B. Duncan

C. Pavona

D. Looks like a favia skeleton, not sure if that small tissue will grow back or not.

E. Platygyra

F. Favia.... Maybe what they call a Christmas Favia.

Any comments on placement? I haven't seen anything put out their night-time tentacles, so I don't know how long they get and if I'll get any fighting. Also, any comments on placement in relation to the pumps?

Also, I did a search on Pavona... All the pictures show "hairy" or "cactus" coral... This frag has no tentacles that I've seen yet, and just seems to be like a really tight, small ridged version of the brain corals.

All the above pictures were taken in "night time" with a flash, in an otherwise pitch-black room. Don't know if that changes the appearance of any of the coral. Also, they had been in the tank for only 12 hours at the time the pics were taken, so I don't know if they look any different now, after settling in a bit more.

"Got a bunch of free frags, But have no idea what they are or how to treat them"

Absolutely ridiculous, irresponsible reefkeeping. :slap:

I hope you take the time to learn about these corals before killing them all off.

Ummm I think you are making quite a leap. Irresponsible would be not inquiring as to the ID or the care.

Cool score on the duncan :)

Yeah, I like the Duncan. I mean, I like em all, but having something with tentacles and a little movement from the current is pretty sweet after weeks and weeks of just rocks and skeletons. And thanks for sticking up for a totally irresponsible new reefer who wasway excited when offered some free frags.

That's a little harsh. You don't know the full circumstances of how he acquired them because they are not stated. He could have went to someone's house and they were tearing down a tank and the guy was either going to give them away for free or chuck em in the trash. I applaud the OP for trying to save them and actually asking here for help/care tips. It's not easy being new to this hobby, and there is no need to flame others for trying to be good hearted reef keepers.

Like you have never made a mistake when you were new to this hobby. C'mon dude, lay off him and find something better to do with your time.

sounds like someones jealous cuz they got no free frags!!lol :P lol

Start them low from you light and raise them up slowly seeing what each one does and adjust accordingly, same with the flow.

well if he is so irresponsible than why is he on the identification part of the forum? o wait i know why so fellow reefers can identify the corals so he can know how to properly take care of them obviously whoever had them before obviously didnt know what they were doing becuase if they did they would of told him what corals they are.

It's been almost 48 hours, and I've already kept them under my MH lights with no screening for ten hours each day. The guy who gave me the frags had them exposed to the same lighting in his tank... so should they be okay? Or do I need to screen them somehow?

As for the slow current, should I turn off my koralia 2 for a few days, and just leave the return pump on? I'm afraid suddenly changing the flow that has been established for a few weeks could mess up the nitrifying bacteria.

Edit- Duncans tentacles look full and healthy all the time. Pavona is starting to let up tiny little tentacles during the day, but still doesn't look as "hairy" as the pics I've seen online. The leather puts out its little feathery filters at night time. The other two, I haven't seen anything out of them yet. No discoloration at all from them, and still have the glow under actinic lighting, so I know they haven't purged their photosynthetic micro partners...

Typical........This site is where people come for help, not to get flamed. If you cant at least be constructive in your critisism, find another forum.

Nice score on the corals and I am glad you are researching how to care for them. Regardless of what the hater was saying, this is actually very responsible practice for someone new in the hobby. Everyone starts somewhere and we all make mistakes. Give us some update pictures as time goes and feel free to re-open this thread if you notice any problems with the new corals.

"A" looks like a Tunicate to me. A yellow Sea Squirt.

Grats on the score...As for the Goni...I'd leave it in, you never know if it will produce a baby...Here is a great thread on someone who this happened to ... I know that Fungia can produce babies in this manner and there is a LFS here in Murrieta CA that has a producing "mother" colony that looked just like that Skeleton-wise. (except this one is a Plate - Fungia). Mother Nature has a way of reproducing even when things look bleak, so you never know...

My pocket guide says that platygra (frag E) are rather aggressive... should I move it further away from the favia (frag F)? It's on a ceramic plug, that isn't glued to anything, so I can put it anywhere.

Also, what is the best time of night (hours after MH goes off) is best for feeding the brain corals? I am yet to see their tentacles because I have had the lights go off the same time I get in bed... around midnight. Guess I'll need to adjust the timer and set my light cycle earlier, if I can't feed em when I wake up at seven AM.

They're all looking awesome, by the way. I'll keep the thread alive w pics.

Any recommendations on feeding the brains? Target feeding with a mini baster, or just dump mysis in and let it circulate so my hermits can clean up scraps?
