15g AGA slow leak

Recommended Posts

I removed the top rim from my AGA, left the bottom rim intact for support.

Over the last month (or more) i've noticed salt creep on the top edge of the BOTTOM rim, very slight.

Next I started to notice a slight dampness occasionally under the bottom rim

Then I saw some water on the counter behind the tank, 2 paper towel sheets soaked it up.

to that point I accredited it all to sloppy water changes that I didn't notice (believable)

last week I had water under the tank that i used paper dowel to 'wick' out. changing the paper towel sheet every time it was soaked, about 15 of them.

NOTE; I have never moved or jarred the tank

today there was about 4 oz of water in front of the tank, and a tiny bit even on the floor (point I wake up and see what's happening) Used a real towel to soak up.

I suspect there is a slow (increasing) leak under my tank (no kidding idiot, at this point)

Questions; "WHY?!"

and "now what?"

Statements; "No I cannot afford to upgrade to the 40br I want right now."

and "I guess this thread is pointless, as it's obvious what's happening, and what must be done, but I guess I just wanted to hear what you folks had to say on the matter."

ps, tested salinity and guess what? its a bit lower, ATO used a lot of water in the last few days.

from another thread>>>

ATO + slow leak = gradually falling salinity.

Make sure this isn't the problem, or your tank will be in serious trouble.

Step 1: Put evrything in a tub

Step 2: Silicone the hole (dowcorning 795 silicone)

Step 3: Put evrything back into the tank

Step 4: Get your 40B going before the aga busts again

Step 5: Thank me :D

What a bummer, I really feel your frustration.

How old was this tank ?

I guess if you can not upgrade at this time, or find a deal on crags list or ebay you may just have to go with a cheap 20 gal.

If there is a local reef club, they can be very generous to fellow reefers in a bind, worth a try.

leak is still very slow. I disconnected the ATO and am maintaining salinity manually.

tank is just over 10 months old. I bought it new. My only guess is the counter (kitchen) isn't perfectly flat and that eventually stressed one of the joints. It seems like its coming from the front left corner, as water is seeping out the side a bit too.

Good news is its like an auto water-change !

kenya tree is dropping branches like a maniac. It has dropped 4 branches in the past 10 months, but now 5 more this week.

the evacuation has begun !

going to slowly transfer corals and critters to 10g I had laying around. Extra LR will go in the bucket.

PetCo has a sale on tanks right now... *cough*

;)

Even though it wasn't listed in the sale, I got one of the girls working there willing to charge me $15 for a 15 gallon tank.

sorry to hear that cruize, with my 15 i put a yoga mat underneath it that i got at a dollar store so it cushions the bottom better. Especially if you take the bottom rim off (which i did) you want the whole bottom supported. Hopefully, you just got a bad tank and it doesn't keep happening to you

yoga mat ! great idea. I did NOT take my bottom rim off tho. :( but going forward I will always put something under tanks to help level them (foam, yoga mat, fluffy animals...)
