Azmanjim
Hi there. Bought a coral from an lfs and in my excitement forgot to ask what it was. Any help? Cheers Link to comment
Gerber77
looks like red carnation coral, doesnt look too good though Link to comment
Austin
CHILI CORAL Take it back, you will kill it, even though you're well-intentioned. IT NEEDS TO BE FED BECAUSE IT DOES NOT EAT LIGHT LIKE OTHER CORALS Link to comment
cheryl jordan
Yes Austin is right, chili coral, needs frequent supplemental feeding to do well or survive. Link to comment
adinsxq
Take it back, you will kill it, even though you're well-intentioned. ... because someone with the right setup is waiting there to buy it? not likely. Link to comment
Azmanjim
Ah rubbish! So would I be completely unable to manage this coral? I put coral food in the water earlier? Link to comment
SbCaes
put it in an area of flow. and feed the tank filter feeder formula. coralfrenzy etc. Link to comment
ajmckay
+1 chili coral. Research it's care and you won't kill it. I will say though that feeding corals becomes a huge pain in the butt after about a year and whenever you try to explain it to someone so they can feed it while you're on vacation. Good luck. Azmanjim
I must be pretty good coz that's exactly what iv inadvertently done! Although iv been Reading up and some people have said it should be in shade. It's about 18 inches below a aquabeam 1000 HD tile but it seems to have gone for the overhang it's rock is sitting on anyway. Do u think the lighting will be too much in it's position? When I bought it the yellow polyps were not apparent at all and these seem to have only shown up in the few hours it's been in my tank Link to comment
organism
Ah rubbish! So would I be completely unable to manage this coral? I put coral food in the water earlier? Well, it looks 90% dead already so you're probably better off taking it back... Link to comment
ajmckay
Organism has a point. Some of the reasons that many people place this coral in the shade is to encourage polyp extension and to keep it from getting overgrown with algae, as it seems that yours has to some degree. You could maybe try a soft bristled, used toothbrush to clean it off. Only go in 1 direction with the polyps and only when it's closed. Link to comment
johnmaloney
is it dead or just stressed from being on its side? Link to comment
Bill Nye
is it dead or just stressed from being on its side? haha Im not sure. It does look pretty bad, I hope the LFS didnt sell it to you in that condition...but with the amount of algae on it I'm assuming they did. I would return this and not go back Link to comment
Azmanjim
Don't really want to go back there anyway to be honest. It's pretty crappy. I'll have a go at rescueing it and see how I get on. I haveanother tank with lower lighting levels and easier access and I'll get all the algae off today! Oh Iv just realised I think it's on it's side as my sea urchin was hecking it out earlier Link to comment
Azmanjim
Right iv had a crack at cleaning him off and moved the tank about a bit anyway today. A lot of the algae is off now and I'm hoping the hermits will get the rest of it. Wasn't keen on brushing it with a toothbrush just incase I damaged the polyps. He's already had a hard time! Oh plus he's standing up right now Link to comment

Azmanjim
which part is the dead flesh? Link to comment
ajmckay
All of it will be dead soon unless you get the algae off of it. This is a non photosynthetic coral. If algae covers up some of the polyps they cannot open and feed. Seriously, google a picture of a normal, healthy chili coral and then look at yours... If the all of the polyps don't start opening up soon it may die quicker than you think. What are you feeding it? http://www.nano-reef.com/corals/?coral=6 Link to comment
Markushka
and these guys prefer to hang, i get better extension with mine that way. Link to comment
