Red Slime Algae killing coral

Recommended Posts

I got back from vacation and noticed I have red slime algae on an acan frag. I know it is usually easy to remove, but this is actually in the pores of the acan skeleton, so using a baster will not remove it. Since it is killing the acan, I'd like to know if you guys have the best way of riding this to save it. I guess it isn't bad if this is the only problem during my vacation.

Thanks guys.

Do a freshwater dip with coral revive or tech coral or lugol's or something. Make sure to raise the pH and temp to match that of your aqaurium.

Also are you sure it's red slime? Red Slime. Cyanobacteria, usually forms mats, and is usually very easy to remove because it sticks to itself more than the substrate.

Most was easy to remove, but it appears it is also down in the pores. I could be wrong. I do have lugol's, so I'll give that a try.

One method that I have come up with for killing red slime is to do a half dose of erythromycen (sp)... it is best considered as a last resort after every natural method has been attempted. I find it is less stressful than chemiclean and more effective. Remove any carbon, do half a dose, wait 48hrs do a 25% WC, Run carbon for a solid week and you should be done with cyanoBACTERIA for good.

Thanks. When you say half dose, what mg and concentration are we talking about? I've never used this before.

I used API's powder form of EM. I believe the standard dose is one packet per 10g so just do one pkt per 20g. can't say what that equates to in Mg and such.

Thanks. I only asked about Mg since some people actually use people meds in their tank. I'll go with the API.

Are you absolutely positive it's cyanobacteria and not brown jelly or some other disease? "Red Slime" is easy to remove and usually does not hunker down in the pores of the skeletal structure. Any chance you can get a pic? Also, if it is brown jelly or another disease it can/will spread to your other LPS's.

iodine and sps usually don't mix well. i used api EM myself, like $14 from the fish store. i did 1 package per 10g, no carbon or skimmer. after 3 days do a water change and re-dose. 3 days later do a big water change and use your skimmer and carbon to remove the rest of the medication. no more red slime.

I removed the red slime from the frags but it would instantly reappear and looked to be in the pores. I was mistaken on the pore part and simply moving the frags to a different area helped out a lot. I do have some cyano, but it isn't too bad. I got most of it with a turkey baster. I may give that treatment a try if it completely gets rid of it.
