mobilehurricane
I have been keeping a successful 6 gallon nano for a little over a year now and just purchased all of the equipment for a new set-up. The tank is a 17.4 gallon Mr. Aqua and I am running a 4 x 24 T5 light fixture. My question involves the stand. I had the perfect stand picked out that I wanted to use that I already had on hand and it is 23.2 inches wide. The tank is 23.6 inches long, which means .2 inches on either side hangs over the edge. It is currently empty as I waiting to decide whether to use the stand or do something different. Thought I would see if anyone had any opinions or experience with this. The side panes are what are hanging over the edge and I don't know if not being on the stand would cause it to be weaker or if it would make any difference at all. Thanks for the help. seabass
I don't know if not being on the stand would cause it to be weaker or if it would make any difference at all.Stands often just hold the edges of a glass tanks (and don't evenly support the weight across the entire bottom). 0.2" doesn't sound that bad; but to be honest, I'd still be afraid to try it. It might look a bit strange too. Link to comment
mobilehurricane
Haha yeah it does scare me a bit which is why I wanted to see what anyone else thought. It isn't noticeable that it goes over the side because there is embellishment on the edges that slopes down away from the top of the table, but I don't want to come home to a flooded house! spanko
Can you purchase some type of molding to put all around the top edge of the stand? Affix the molding with both nails and liquid nails. I would have a problem with the stand as is but with the molding securely I think you would be fine. Link to comment
mobilehurricane
I can do something along those lines or use a secondary stand that I don't like as much. Thanks for the response, just wanted some other opinions before I filled it up that way, and my fears have been confirmed, it just didn't seem safe enough so I had to ask. Link to comment
evokid511
you can get a piece of wood cut the the exact length and width of the tank and place it under the tank and on the stnad youd like so it will support the edges while still using the stand for the main support Link to comment
iFISTmoose
you guys are being way too cautious. its fine. i once had a full 20 gall sticking 5 inches over the edge for like a week and nothing happened. i slid my friends nanocube across the desk on to a mini fridge with all the water in it and nothing happened. then i took the nanocube, drained out half the water and carried it to the car, and then drove for 3 hrs while it was in the uneven trunk and carried it to his dorm. its fine. its not gonna break. people are just wat to cautious sometimes. mobilehurricane
evokid...that was something else that i had considered. i was going to cut a piece of 3/4 plywood and paint it black to set on top of the table...may do that since it will barely be hanging over, no more than a half inch. ifistmoose...i would do that with my current nano...but this is a rimless tank with no other support other than the silicone and i don't think i want to risk it. you're probably right that it wouldn't break though Link to comment
iFISTmoose
i didint know your tank is rimless. in that case, i would get a .5 inch this piece of acrylic and put it under the tank. Link to comment
FZhang
I would just put top on the stand. A piece of nice granite might look nice. What't the stand look like? Link to comment
mobilehurricane
I will post a picture tonight and then everyone can get a better idea of how it looks and what I'm working with. Its a deep red brown color wood with a storage shelf underneath and stands on 4 legs that are about 2.5 feet tall. Link to comment
disaster999
ive placed a 24" tank ontop of my 20" stand...2 inch over hang on each side and still held up for a year until i took it down. sure it would look weird, but hey it worked Link to comment
mobilehurricane
thanks for all the replies. i decided to use a different stand since i had 2 and this one allows all the glass to fit on the top, better safe than sorry i guess Link to comment
