danthenewreefman
There is a special running on Glass Cages for a rimless ~105g tank. Dimensions 36 x 37 x 18. I want to do something similar to the volcano tank, except with 2 or 3 smaller moutains. Going with a tank in these dimensions would provide more square inches of tank floor for the fish to swim than a 60 x 20 tank. And he would have more options for swimming paths... It is $250. So it would be about $150 cheaper than a 60x20x? tank. Wanting opinions. As a point of reference the volcano tank is 48x24 in floor space. I know this lacks the gallons recommended for the desjardini tang, but it would provide more space to swim. So is gallons really what is important, or tank floor space? Link to comment
Meengineer0128
The book I have by Julian Sprung recommends a minimum of 48x18x24. That said, you may be able to look at it as your making up for your length with your extra width and depth. I can't say yes or no, as I only have yellow Tangs in my 150g, but hope this info helps. danthenewreefman
I'm just picturing a standard rectangle tank w/ a rock wall....not much room to swim... but a 36 x 36 square tank with say three islands would give him countless more paths to swim? I just don't know if the gallons or the floor space (square inches) is more important? Link to comment
TheUnfocusedOne
Not to side track, but becareful with glasscages... You'd be hard to find possitive feedback from what I've seen. I bought a tank from them and it started leaking from a seam after ~4months ####ty craftmanship if you ask me Link to comment
NaClCrocodile
My only concern is that these tangs get very tall. Probably one of the tallest fish, pectoral to dorsal wise, that I can think of - maybe a batfish is taller. I agree with you on the whole swim space idea, having more space to swim is better than pure gallons. If I were you, I'd go with a zebra angelfish. If I got a big tank again, that'd be the first big fish I'd get. Link to comment

God, I would FREAK out if I bought a tank set it up and started leaking....is Glass Cages that bad?!?? Link to comment
danthenewreefman
I've just browsed through their negative feedback on various sites....looks like it is 50/50 on quality you'll recive very scary, but price makes it tempting....GOD! Link to comment
fewskillz
I just don't know if the gallons or the floor space (square inches) is more important? Floor space is more important than total volume, but really length is more important than total square footage. Tangs need room for bursts of speed. 50" (The hypotenuse across a 36" square) is just too short for a sailfin. You could do a bristletooth tang (Kole, mimic, etc.), but sailfin's just get way too big (15+ inches long and at least 12" tall). I wouldn't keep a sailfin in any tank with less than a 6' of clear length, 8' is preferred though. I won't put one in my 6x2x2 180. Link to comment

Most fish, especially tangs, swim side to side, not up and down. Therefore a tall tank does not make up for lack of length. I'd say no to a salfin in the particular tank. Also, do NOT buy a tank from glass cages no matter how good of a deal it is. You get what you pay for and I guarantee that tank plus clean up after the tank busts will cost more than a well built tank from a reputable manufacturer. Link to comment
danthenewreefman
I'm extremely happy I asked...Glasscages is just too much of a risk for me! My only other option is a petsmart/petco tank, unless y'all have another online vendor who sells good quality tanks? $400 is my budget for the tank, but I do not want it drilled; The fuge will be higher than the main tank in another room separated by a wall. I plan to order this weekend, someone is coming to pickup two of my puppies Saturday (chaaaching?) The rush is b/c I have a 1 inch desjardini in a 30g currently. Realistically I know he is happy now...but a month or two from now he might not be... Link to comment
NaClCrocodile
Green Leaf Aquariums is pretty awesome. I think most custom tank manufacturers - LeeMar, Miracles, etc - are going to cost more than your budget. What size tank are you looking for? Link to comment

I think most custom tank manufacturers - LeeMar, Miracles, etc - are going to cost more than your budget. What size tank are you looking for? my stand is 60 x 20, I would really like to have something that size as the stand was over $1000 I've seen something like a 60x20x24 at petsmart for $360 before... I was tempted to not use the stand b/c of the deal at Glasscages, thinking the savings could be used on building a new stand, but ideally I'd like to use the same stand. Link to comment
danthenewreefman
Is the stand gold plated? no, furniture oak tv stand, fancy looking, girl said it had to look good to go in living room. old school stand for those huge projection TVs I've already braced it with 2 x 4, it used to hold my 80g mbuna tank Link to comment

This is by far one of my favorite fish but it should really get 8' or more. When I get my 240 (dreaming ) I'll get one. As far as other sources for the tank, I would highly suggest sifting through Craigslist and local reef clubs. However, I am a fan of buying used whenever I can so this may not be up your alley.
