Reefmonster
Hello everyone! I bought MikeTR's BC 14G LED Hood and was wondering if the Stars on the XP-G cool whites are bigger or smaller than the stars on the Q5 XR-E's...I'm thinking about replacing the cool whites because they seem a bit yellow to me (I like more blue in my lighting)... and I read somewhere that the XP-G have a higher K rating and more light output...Please correct me if I'm wrong. Also need to know where to get them...I'm in California, USA. Can I replace them 1 for 1 or will I need to change the buckpucks? Each PS is a Potrans 24V 8A, if I read it right... I'm worried about spacing as I have a busted thumb (hand -wrist in a cast) and it would be H A R D for me to re-drill the heatsink... I'm new at this so if you need any more info, just let me know. Any help is welcome and appreciated. Link to comment

Reefmonster
The whites are XR-E WG-Q5 Cool White I just looked them up and it says they are 5000 to 10000K...Is that right? I'm really confused, but thanks to you Mike, I have a MUCH better understanding of how to actually put one together...except for the LED's...still don't get the BIN and all that... So are these the highest K rating they make for bulbs? Hope that makes sense... Link to comment

The 5000 to 10000k range is the "cool white" range, inside it you get different leds that sit at different points in that range. so your WG's are rated between 5700-6350k the next BIN up is called WC which is 6350-7000k the WG and WC are the most common. u can get higher but they are harder to find. u can find them all the way up to 10,000k take a look at page 7 on the pdf below, shows you the different BINs on the first graph: http://www.cree.com/products/pdf/XLamp7090XR-E_B&L.pdf Zeadon Link to comment

I'm a 911 systems hardware engineer, and this stuff seems harder than that... I really do appreciate the help! Where could I look for these... Should I just do a search on Google? Link to comment
EliPhant
just curious, but are the led's on dimmable drivers? if so, why not just adjust the whites lower and blues higher. You probably won't want to run the leds at full power in a bc14 anyways. If they arent on dimmable drivers then nvm, lol. Link to comment

Where could I look for these... Should I just do a search on Google? WC are common so abit of googling will find them, not sure about bins with higher K, i haven't seen any for sale but if you find some let me know haha! below is the Q5 WCs, http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11023 but if you are looking for a different shape star then your gonna have to do some more searching. although i don't know why the shape of the star matters, is there something special about your fixture that u need a certain shape? just curious, but are the led's on dimmable drivers? if so, why not just adjust the whites lower and blues higher. Yeh i agree. if yours are dimmable then do that first before u spend cash. also do u have lenses on your leds? if you do then try taking them off, you will get better blending of the colours and you wont see the cool white-ness as much. gd luck! Yeah they are dimmable, but I guess I didn't understand how that worked...I thought that dimming just meant making them brighter or less bright...like my dimmer for my office light. I see what you mean now...hehe WC are common so abit of googling will find them, not sure about bins with higher K, i haven't seen any for sale but if you find some let me know haha! below is the Q5 WCs, http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11023 but if you are looking for a different shape star then your gonna have to do some more searching. although i don't know why the shape of the star matters, is there something special about your fixture that u need a certain shape? Whoa...lots of questions I don't have answers to... I don't think they have lenses, they just look like leds I've seen online, nothing is really on them. I got the hood from Mike TR and the heatsink is pre-drilled so I would think that size of the star would matter, but I could be wrong. I guess I just need to mess around with it. How should I adjust the colors...is there a guide for that, or is it all by eye? Sorry for the dumb questions. Link to comment
imsobored152
sorry don't have an answer, but let me rephrase the question for you so you might get the answer you want. He wants to know if the xpg stars are the same size as the xre stars since the heatsink is already drilled for xre sized stars. He wants to replace with xpg but only if the stars are the same size so he doesnt have to redrill and tap. if theyre adjustable just turn the knobs. Are they all white? or a mix of white and blue? if its a mix and theyre on theyre on buckpuck just turn the whites down and blues up. if its a mix and theyre on the same buckpuck....well there isnt much you can do, unless you want to rewire it all. if its just whites, then replace some of the whites with some blue leds, and give them their own buckpuck. EliPhant
yeah i have XR-E cool white leds and XR-E royal blue leds on separate dimmable drivers. The whites alone are an ugly yellow color but I just adjust it to be more blue than white. Do that before you go spending extra cash =P The corals seem to do well regardless. Just don't keep them on full blast. I have everything from softies to SPS in my bc8 with 8 LEDs (4 white 4 blue) and they are dialed down a LOT and the corals are fine. My whites are at about 10% and the blues are at about 25%. Link to comment
