I picked up some frags this weekend. The guy gave me some of this algae he said It does the same thing as Chaeto. I did not write down what he called it and by the time I got home and was setting up my frags I forgot the name. He told me to just clip it to the glass and leave it in the tank. Any info would be great.

Gracilaria

I looked it up. It says it is mostly used for feeding fish. Does it have any cheatolike qualities? Is there any benifit to keeping this in my tank? I don't think the fish I have would eat it.

It has some qualities as do virtually all macros. They feed off of the excess nutrients in our tank. However, IME it doesn't grow as fast as chaeto, but it'll help out your water quality and I think it's much nicer looking than chaeto. However, Chaeto is much better at extracting excess nutrients. I actually have multiple kinds of macro growing in 95 gallon's fuge... The Gracilaria is great for the tangs and other herbivorous or omnivorous fish and inverts. They are high in beneficial vitamins, etc. to prevent fish disease. Good stuff:)

I have clowns, a firefish, a watchman goby. I may still have a tailspot, he has been MIA for a while. Would any of them benifit from it? He had the plant stuck to the glass with magnets. Should I leave it like that or plant it? I am assuming it needs light, so putting it in the back chambers with no light won't be good...

Those fish will ignore the macro. I would stick it in the back chamber and put a HD clamp light with a 50w spiral bulb over it or some kind of underwater light that you can buy online. If you want to keep it in the display, put it wherever you want.
