Okay, I'm starting a 2.5 really soon and I'm trying to figure out biological filteration. How does it work? Like how do rock and sand break down amonia and stuff to make them okay? Sorry I'm a dweeb but i want to understand this.

The rock and sand are home to the bacteria which break down ammonia into nitrite and nitrite into nitrate.

Have a gander at this: http://www.nano-reef.com/articles/?article=17

All of my tanks are run purely on biological filtration. No mechanical or chemical filtration at all.. seems to work for me! :)

biological is the most important. I run filter floss in a HOB just to remove chunks of debris that I don't like seeing float around, but everything is broken down by the tiny creatures !

Filtration deals with ammonia and nitrites (and eventually nitrates), but water changes are the main method of removing things that accumulate.

You don't run Chemi-Pure? What kills all the cancer in your tanks?
