blue green chromis

Hi,

My tank is about six weeks old. I put 2 green chromis in a couple weeks ago (I have a 20g). I have frozen brine shrimp and Aqueon tropical flakes. All they seem to want to eat is the brine shrimp, and go insane over it. Whenever I feed them the flake, they dont eat it. I'm concerned that feeding them purely brine shrimp would not be enough variety to keep them healthy. I also have some Aqueon bottom feeder tablets, but they don't seem to like that either. Anyone have any pointers?

Thanks.

are you feeding with the pumps on or off? my blue-green chromis love it when the pumps are on because they like to chase th flakes around, they dont eat it as well when i turn the pumps off.

don't use the tablets. buy a variety of frozen food if that's what they like. or pellets. they are some of the easiest fish to keep so you should be fine with them.

I was just about to ask the very same question! I added my Green Chromis to a 6g Edge on tuesday. I didn't try feed him that day. He didn't eat flake the next day, wednesday. On thursday and friday, I fed him frozen brine shrimp and he loved it. Saturday, I tried flake again, and he didn't eat it. Same thing this morning.

On one hand, I'm thinking like my parents did, when I was a kid, "Well, I guess you're not that hungry, then."

But on the other hand, I want to make sure that he's doing as well as he can be, since he's new and in a new tank (he seems well otherwise). It's just him and a scarlet hermit, btw.

So, should I give him some frozen brine? Or is that spoiling him?

Thanks!

BTW, what ever became of your situation, "krv"?

Holy thread necro, batman!

Chromis will eat just about anything, however, they are also special in comparison to other damsels. In the wild, chromis are filter feeders, eating almost solely phytoplankton. I have not seen people keep chromis long term unless they are kept in a reef that is fed live phyto. As soon as I started feeding my five chromis phyto in addition to frozen mysis, squid, and some algae stuff, they went from bland-looking mildly active to brilliantly colored incredibly active. They have been less aggressive toward each other, as well.

Frozen brine are really not that nutritious and should not be fed on a regular basis.

Haha. At least I used the search tool, eh? :)

Oh, man... looks like I'm gonna have to do some food shopping!

Do you ever use flake?

And is frozen brine just a treat, then?

I never feed flake, ever. I don't feed frozen brine, either, because it isn't nutritious. I am getting brine eggs to feed every few days as a supplement. Everything goes ape#### when I add live stuff. :)

Looks like I've got some food research to do :/

Food is one of the most important things in your tank - well, who am I kidding, just about everything is one of the most important things!

Petco sells a "saltwater multi pack" of frozen foods, is like a 30-pack of cubes or something, this is wonderful to feed - feed a different cube with each feeding and it gives a great variety. They also sell PhycoPure, it is refrigerated live phytoplankton. They keep them (usually) in the fridge with reptile food.

That sounds easy enough :)

So, are these cubes prepared the way I was told to prep the frozen brine shrimp cubes, i.e, cut a piece off and dissolve it in a shot glass of aquarium water, then feed? I used a tiny spoon to spoon a few shrimp in at a time.

Any thoughts on pellets? I bought some marine pellets w garlic (Omega One). They seemed too hard for my Damsel. He'd grab em and spit em out, and repeat until the pellets sank to the bottom :/ My Chromis wouldn't even grab them. They'd just sink really quickly ://

Yeah, he's tiny right now. Thought I'd be able to later move him into my 12g Edge, but I just found out that that is too small, too :/

Yep, same way. I use a whole cube (but I am feeding five chromis, a clownfish, a firefish, a yellow watchman, and now a lyretail anthias and a pearly jawfish), but essentially the same - just let it sit in a bit of tank water til it is thawed out. I use a turkey baster to spray it into the water, though, so none of it floats at the surface and gets sucked to my sump.

I used pellets sometimes for my freshwater tank, but I stopped that. If they have garlic they should be nutritious, but I would just put a couple of drops of Selcon or GarlicXtreme into the frozen food as it thaws. :)

Cool, I'll buy some. And a turkey baster!

Yeah, feeding FW fish seemed easier. Especially with a Corydora quickly cleaning up.

Give them time and they will eat anything. My chromis are pigs. Flake, Pellet, Mysis, little pieces of Nori they will take it all.

I would make sure the food is small enough for them to eat.
