tcase420
Yep, It has taken over. It really is beautiful, but it is starting to shade out everything. This is Red Sea pom pom xenia, that never stops pulsing away. I have to get rid of alot of it. I started out with 2 stalks and probably have about 40 now. I have never shipped coral before and don't know if anyone would even buy it. How much could I possibly get for a frag? So I was thinking maybe Craigslist and hope there are some locals that would be interested. What do you all think? It's even growing on the glass and in the sand. Link to comment
MikeTR
Tweezers and yank it out... some may grow back but it'll be easy to chip off just that small portion of rock later if it does.. you can rubberband the pieces you rip off to rubble or a plug.. I bought quite a bit from my LFS for $10 once.. I'd sell it for $5. Link to comment
Perm
I have the best luck peeling it off the rock. Try and go slow so you dont leave any tissue on the rock. Any tissue left will grow again. I just gave mine away. It was hard enough trying to get people to come and pick it up. Link to comment
Kittysnax
oh man if i was local. I cant find any of the pulsing kind here /cry everyone seems to trash it here :< Link to comment
Pickle010
I just had nightmare flash backs looking at those pics of your xenia - it is the devil!!! At least in my tank it was - It grew up the back wall and onto a power head then all hell broke loose. The stuff was growing everywhere. I fragged a lot of it and traded it with other local reefers. But when it got out of hand I tried killing it - even posted a thread asking for ways to kill it. Most people gave me the standard - save it - frag it trade it - I want it answers. In the end the stuff was beating me so I had to do something drastic...I salvaged my corals off the affected rocks and cooked them to kill it. I do think xenia is great for a fuge and that's about the ONLY place I'll keep any now. Link to comment
Markushka
I think it looks pretty cool but you wouldn't get much selling it here. you could try to sell it back to your LFS... Link to comment
faerl
You won't get much for it generally but just killing it is a bit of a waste. I'd either sell some to the LFS or sell it cheap here (make sure buyers are paying for shipping etc). That is some nice looking xenia though. I wouldn't mind a smaller stalk of it. As everyone has said though, xenia is one of those things you do in small quantities for just that reason. I do think xenia is great for a fuge and that's about the ONLY place I'll keep any now. I'm curious. Does xenia do anything with nitrates? I know a lot of people that won't put them in their tanks (obvious reasons) but I'm trying to figure out why you'd put it in a fuge? Link to comment

Just reading this thread has got me looking over my shoulder at my zenia. I have the same kind and it is growing at an amazing rate. Link to comment
Markushka
I have some xenia ( not the same as the op's) too but it's not growing fast at all and I'm not sure about it affecting nitrates... Link to comment
RyanR1212
you can pull it off slowly with your hands... if any stays on the rock then you can inject it with hot water to kill it.. if you dont get that little bit off the rock then it will grow back in time, so make sure whatever you do you get it all off Link to comment
reefer916
I have the same issue in my 24 gallon. It covered the back wall and upper tier of my LR. I just pull it off and give it away. There are some people I sold 5 stalks for $5. I don't really care about making money on them. I'd prefer to pull them out and give them away to some local newbie's rather than flush them. You could probably get $5 per stalk, but I just gave them a handful of frags to get rid of them. Link to comment
weeber
with my xenia my LFS just used a large syphon hose when doing a water cahnge to suck it al off and once he was done i used kawlk powder to kill the remaining bits of flesh and it worked like a charm. Link to comment
thewire
give it to people that just started out....karma Link to comment

reefer916
It's actually funny... When I post on the local forums to give the Xenia away for free, everyone flaked out. I just charge $5 and give them several stalks. I have to cut mine once a month to keep it from overtaking my tank. Regarding nitrate export. It does work very well. The only Xenia I kept in my 24 gallon AP are the ones growing on my upper back wall towards the top. It's almost like a natural protein skimmer. I have 0 nitrates and the xenia grow like weeds. Hanser
This was my first coral, as a newbie I paid $60.00 for three or four stalks. I loved the pulsing action and was very hypnotic to watch swaying and pulsing in the current... Then it started to spread, and I thought "great" I'm doing something right. Not only is it staying alive, its growing and spreading...then it started to take over my tank. Its funny some people say they cant keep Xenia alive. I cant get rid of it. I have sold some to the store I bought it at, got $7.00 a frag, $14.00 for larger pieces. When thinning out my Xenia I've used razor blades to cut the stalk at the base. Then I go back with tweezers and peel as much of the tissue off as I can. I've flushed a a dozen stalks down the drain and I don't feel right about it. But it is a weed. Link to comment
YouKnowBlev
Just a heads up. I'd love to pay for shipping if someone would send me a handful of stalks. Broke "back to college" reefer here. Link to comment

YouKnowBlev
I don't think xenia ships very well. Really? What's the deal? Just doesn't do temp changes well? Link to comment
YouKnowBlev
...and on that note i'd still rather someone try than just toss them out.I'd also throw some money at yeah. PM? Link to comment
Degener8
It ships fine .. how do you think it gets to most LFS's Pack it with enough water to keep it submerged during shipping. Use a hot or cold pack as needed to keep it clsoe to temp.. Acclimate it correctly.. and you should be fine. Link to comment
tcase420
Thanks for all the interest guys. I'll be picking up some insulation board this weekend and try to locate some heat packs. I'll give it a try. I'll get back to all interested on monday. Link to comment
Dani3d
It's the first time I read that xenia consume nitrates! or are they more consuming microorganism in the water and that fact prevent nitrates buildup? I would be surprised if they actualy eat nitrates?? It's actually funny... When I post on the local forums to give the Xenia away for free, everyone flaked out.
