Tired
On 4/6/2022 at 10:36 AM, Riona said: Seeing this list, how ARE rough headed blennies and goldline blennies in tanks? All I can find on either is that they're reef safe, but a lot of the blennies that are more commonly kept are listed that way and will nip at corals/clams. I've kept a couple from KP Aquatics. Rough headed blennies do not nip at anything except pods. They're like barnacle blennies- they sit in a hole waiting for prey. They're not a rock-hopping nips-at-everything blenny. They're also so small that they can live mostly or entirely off of copepods in your tank, which is convenient. They need holes about 1/4" across to live in, and/or empty snail shells. In my limited experience, they do not like each other. They need room to form individual territories, if you want multiples. A foot of distance is probably fine, they're tiny. They're also incredibly inactive- they pick a spot and stay in it. Except maybe to go to a vacation home in a different spot. 2 Quote Link to comment

Gobies and blennies I think are the ideal aquarium fish. I don't carry fish though. We carry the cross barred venus clam, it is easy to keep in captivity. It isn't particularly attractive, but it is a fun curiosity and does help filter your tank (to some extent, it is a small species). I ran out of tank space awhile ago, we don't really do oddballs anymore but our selection grew. Anything I carry that isn't on the normal part of the website can be found here in the out of season section: https://www.reefcleaners.org/aquarium-store/out-of-season There are a lot of other species I could source, but I don't think they are compatible in captivity for one reason or another. If we did want some more oddball inverts could we email you about the potential of getting them special ordered? Quote Link to comment

johnmaloney
We should be moving to our new facility in 6 months or so. Built in May 2022 but waiting for electric to be connected for almost a year now. Dealing with FPL has been a much longer process than I planned for. The best was on the day of installation they changed the plans they drew up earlier, because they did not have the transformers in stock. Took them 30 minutes while I waited in the lobby.... one year much later. 😄 1 Quote Link to comment
johnmaloney
Here is the new shop, soon to be energized. (Got power to the transformer late last week, just need an electrician to hook it up to the building). 1 Quote Link to comment
johnmaloney
The metal structure in the back is going to be a greenhouse. It is also waiting for power, I am saving the roof until then so it doesn't run out prematurely waiting for the electric. 😐 I am going to have an experiments area again, so there may be new oddballs then. Right now though I have every tank occupied. The new species we added took up all the remaining space. And the new project has taken up a lot of my experiment time. I have been learning a lot about building lately. Why? Because when you hire someone in FL for a construction job, for some reason they talk to you like you know their job. I had to read books, watch Youtube and talk to other tradesman just to carry on the conversation to the point of signing the job order. My friend insists it is "because most GCs know what they are doing." I had to look up what a GC was. 😄 1 Quote Link to comment
johnmaloney
The greenhouse in the back (to the right, blue framing) is going to be for macroalgae. That tank in the picture is 20 feet long, 6 feet wide, and 2 feet deep. There are 4 of them, and 2 mangrove troughs the same size but only 6 inches deep. I am finally to the point of ordering the tanks for inside the shop, so get your requests in now. I got ahold of some containers that go inside the tank, that are a rigid mesh bottom made with very fine mesh. I think I will be able to carry more small shrimp as a result. I wish I knew the name of the mesh material, it seems very useful. I will post a picture later if I remember. Quote Link to comment

BadCrab
Hi John - glad to hear the new facility is warming up! Since you've asked, I'm keen to get a few Mime Crabs and Money Cowrie when they're restocked. I'm also interested in trying Tall Codium if it can withstand my CUC. Additionally, I'm planning to heavily stock a section of my nano with Ricordea and Sexy Shrimp. I'm super interested in the various nano cleaner shrimps too if you restock them - those guys are really hard to stumble upon at an LFS. Do you know if Lima Shrimp would be hosted by anything that's reasonable to keep in a nano? (not a scallop! ) Similarly, if an urchin isn't available what would host a Zebra Crab? johnmaloney
Thanks! Mime Crabs will be back after the move during the summer months. Maybe this year, likely next. We may bring back small shrimp too, right now I am just doing it a few times a year. They just aren't as hardy as I would like. It is my understanding that they will only host in scallops/urchins but neither the shrimp or crabs require them. The Lima Shrimp are pretty hardy, I should harass a collector I know to go find us some.... people aren't keeping Flame Scallops as much anymore, Lima Shrimp are bycatch of that fishery. I just haven't seen Zebra crabs available in awhile, I like them and have tanks for them now. Just not available. 2 Quote Link to comment
