Jacobnano
And it doesn't mind not having a deeper sandbed? I used to have some but it didn't seem to like the shallow sand I had It was great for a while. I should mention that I no longer have the Eel grass, it lived for only a few months. Sweet find! Looks great in there and seems to be growing rather well for you. What sort of substrate composition is it in? Have you enriched anything in the area (very well may not have to, given the amounts one needs to feed these systems)? Lighting (if different)? Thanks again. Yoshii, it may have had more to do with the temperature, though I don't know the temperature ranges within which you maintain your tank. That species typically prefers cooler water. Well it was doing pretty well. I went for the finest grain part of the tank, the most like the mud it is found in at my cabin. The sand/pebbles had not been disturbed for months so there were plenty of "nutrients" there. Plus, I do as you guessed have to feed a lot. I think the reason for the recent loss may have been it went to seed. I could be crazy though too. I saw the grass flowering which was very interesting, then it melted away. It had been putting out visible roots and appeared to be fine, so who knows. Link to comment

I'm not sure about that species in particular, but others often bounce back from rhizomes in the substrate--often when you least expect it. Link to comment

I don't want to dig up the sand, but I don't think there is any still intact. Link to comment
Jacobnano
Breaking news! My uncle sent me some Eel grass that had washed up on the beach for my birthday so that is cool, it is now planted in my tank, deeper this time, to see how it does. More importantly! Out of my three sculpin, to have paired up and I have seen them mating. It is pretty interesting. I don't know if anyone else has had this happen before. Link to comment

I have three sculpin, and two out of the three are paired up, there is one lone male ha. I was very surprised! Nope nope, but I could probably take one later. I just want to see if they lay eggs. yoshii
Oops I read that as "one out of my three sculpin" I didn't have my temperate tanks for long, but I never heard of mating sculpins on temperate forums. Darn, I thought this might have been useful, but you have to buy it :/ I didn't find any other links on my quick google search Link to comment

Too bad I would have to buy it. It did tell me the spawning season is in January which is pretty close! Even though the sculpin may have lost all sense of time in my somewhat static aquarium. ( I swear to god thats what its called, no kidding) It's a specialized prehensile anal fin that helps hold onto the females when they mate. Trust me you'll know it when you see it, lol. Its blueish green and about 1/3 the length of its body. I'll try and snap some pics of one of my males with his extended. ( Is that considered fish porn?) My male sculpins have been doing this pretty regularly, but thats about as far as it goes. The males guard the eggs after they are laid but I havn't seen any of them hatch out or anything. I'm sure they all just get eaten before they could hatch. I looked up a bunch of info when they first started doing this, here's some of the more informative sites I found: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site...us_snyderi.html http://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/bitst....pdf?sequence=1 Link to comment

I know that sharks have something similar but didn't know about the sculpin. Huh, well that would be interesting to see the eggs to say the least. A good opportunity to use my macro lens Thanks for the links! Congrats, that's awesome! Even if you don't get babies, at least you know you're doing something right Yea that's what I was thinking! I have been seeing lots of pods and worms, as well as coralline growing in pretty large amounts on the glass. Takes a while, but a good sign Link to comment
