jds
While I was hunting for the killer crab who I have seen to be about 2.5" wide, see pic at the end, I ran into this shrimp. So its head is clear but the body seems darker and its about 2" long. Fast as hell but here is the best pic I could get. Any id help would be great. Here is this crab, btw in the same location as I shot the shrimp but hours earlier Link to comment

jds
So I decided to see what kinda of shrimp he was to see if he attacked when poked. I took a wooden skewer and that little thing attacked it with its "club" and you could hear the cracking of it...WOW I was amazed. He took the poking for a bit then he ran off....ugh, so now a mantis and a gorilla crab?!!? Link to comment
er1c_the_reefer
given time the mantis shrimp will eat the gorilla crab. Link to comment

jds
Mantis shrimp are pretty cool after you read about them. Well cool aside I cant keep a CUC alive. I have lost my first CUC, 4 hermits and 2 snails in the last 2 weeks. So one of these 2 are eating them. -jds Link to comment
lakshwadeep
You could just give it away or make a small tank to keep it. Link to comment
tinctorus
I say skewer it get an octopus hell eat the mantis and the crab then just leave the top open on the tank and you will have gotten rid of all three very easily hahah Link to comment
RLC
If your lucky it will turn in to this some day. This is our mantis in a 29 gallon. Link to comment
jds
RLC, does it live alone? I would keep it but I assume its him taking out my CUC. Anyhow, he is still hiding but the crab was in his normal spot last night. If your lucky it will turn in to this some day. This is our mantis in a 29 gallon. Link to comment
jds
Ok so this mantis is smarter than Yogi Bear. New bottle trap set and I tempted him with a piece of shrimp on stick and he came out to play.... The best videos I can get of it... Mantis Video Mantis Video 2 Link to comment

It's not everyday you meet an animal with the most advanced eyes or the striking ability to produce a small amount of light in an imploding bubble. Link to comment
petkingdom619
"fail" ... right, I fail for saying that. It just reminded me of the slipper lobster tails I was eatin at some place Link to comment
Reefer Al
Yeah, dude! Whenever I see a full grown mantis I cannot help but have the tremendous urge to grab it by the back and take a huge bite out of it!!!!!!! hahahaha Link to comment
dsoz
fail. It's not everyday you meet an animal with the most advanced eyes or the striking ability to produce a small amount of light in an imploding bubble. Isn't that a pistol shrimp? Not a mantis shrimp... Most advanced eye I can believe, but the imploding bubble is the pistol. dsoz Link to comment
petkingdom619
I wonder what clown fish taste like. Can probably eat it bone and all. maybe some live sushi with rice and bubble algae? Link to comment

Most advanced eye I can believe, but the imploding bubble is the pistol. dsoz Both pistols and mantis shrimp can do it. The mantis makes the bubble when striking something. Someone posted a youtube video by a researcher studying them, and there they talk about the bubble and show a high-speed clip. petkingdom: I meant that it's sad to kill the mantis. There are some people who eat [a larger species] mantis shrimp. Link to comment
petkingdom619
i know i was jokin around. just give it to your lfs if you catch it Link to comment
jds
Ok so he is definately interested in shrimp pieces but he is very suspect of the plastics bottle trap. When i move the stick with the shrimp he comes out to play. The rest of the time he pokes his head out and stares at the bottle and the shrimp. He gets close, crawling around it but wont go in! Seriously who made these guys so damn smart!?!!? I will be giving him to the LFS but I will be killng the gorilla crab once I get this guy out. Link to comment
subtraho
when you catch him. get some boiling water, throw it in there, melt some butter .. and yummmm I don't think I could ever eat them (Too intelligent to eat - my conscience would never forgive me. I can't eat cephalopods for the same reason), but they're definitely on the menu in some places. Link to comment

I would keep it but I assume its him taking out my CUC.Anyhow, he is still hiding but the crab was in his normal spot last night. We did have a couple of fish with him but we removed them. He wouldn't even look at them. Smashers can be good tank mates with other fish. I just wouldn't keep fish that swim on the bottom. Link to comment
Psychosis
Man everyone gets the cool hitchers but me. Do you have any idea how long I've been looking for a Mantis? From your basic description, the video, and the fact that it's common, I'd say it's an N.Wennerae. That little bugger deserves his own 5 gallon tank. You seem to enjoy playing around with it at any rate (bad porn night). If the bottle trap ends up failing, there are a few other methods. Of course, many of those depend on you removing the rock from the tank, and it doesn't look like you can do that with the rock he's currently situated in. Best of luck at any rate. Link to comment
jds
Ok I give up. Its been almost a week and I cant catch this shrimp. I almost had him with a net and a stick with shrimp to lure him out of his rock but he is just to fast. The bottle trap laid there for 2 days and no luck either. I also yanked the rock and squirted FW in the holes at the risk of killing some hitchhiker corals but that also didnt work. Anyone have an idea? at this point I'm willing to kill the rock with FW and just start the cycle over... -jds Link to comment
evilc66
Don't see what the problem is. You seemed pretty entertained in the videos. Keep it and start a mantis tank. Link to comment
