DIY REFUGIUM IN TANK

I am esentially creating a false wall that is centered in the back of by 30 gallon aquarium to hide pumps, heaters etc. The aquarium is 30" long and the false wall section is 13" by 3.5" and is the height of the tank. I want to make a refugium that would fit inside the opening in the back and would be 8" deep by 7.5" wide and 2.5" in depth. Would this be effective for this size aquarium or am I just thinking too much.haha Thanks guys.
