javisaman
You have an awesome tank. I hope you get the algae under control. Thanks! Much appreciated. Your tank is coming out great too! Definitely did more research than I did to start off =P Algae is being an issue mostly because I'm experimenting with different feeding methods. I spot feed ALL of my corals. SPS get Rod's Food juice, zoos/palys get brine, lps get mysis/bloodworms/pellets. I've also been working to get my mandarin back into shape. It's been with me for 2 years and 1 month now. It started off on only live food. It took live brine off the bat, but didn't take frozen brine till months later. It never took mysis. Ultimately brine (even super-duper-whatever-the-hell-you-call-it) is not nutritionally sufficient in my opinion. In the past few months I've gotten it to take vitamin enriched frozen blood worms and formula 1 marine pellets. It's looking loads better (still skinnish, but slightly better colors, and a lot more active). I'll admit though that it never looked sickly with the brine shrimp, it's just that I've seen healthier mandarins. Link to comment
javisaman
I forgot to add how much i hate my magnetic scraper. Two years of use has yielded permanent scratches ALL over my 20L...FML Link to comment
tam
nice tank. dig mushu and your zoas. Link to comment
javisaman
Much appreciated, thanks! Yes Mushu is a looker. I'm thinking of getting a female spotted for a hybrid mix. But there is always a lot to consider when you're adding a wild mandarin. Link to comment
javisaman
A couple of FAILs last week. 1) Attempted to add a female mandarin. Female is slightly bigger attacked Mushu like no other... Currently in breeder net. Looking to be donated. 2) Burned wires and chair because I left my metal halide lamp on a chair over night. I was being lazy after a water change. The lamp turned on by itself. After a while I see smoke and run down to see a scorched chair and melted wires...FML Link to comment
javisaman
Bad news the female mandarin I got passed in the breeding net. Totally my mistake for purchasing it to begin with. Though it was larger than my already established mandarin, it didn't take well to frozen foods even after some training. Chucking lots of live pods and fortified brine into the net wasn't enough. It ate but I think it may have been mortally wounded by the fighting with the other. I didn't realize female mandarin show aggression to males. Mushu (the male) had bite marks all over it's gills but seems to be doing fine and is fully recovered. I am working on an epic LED lighting fixture for my tank. 30 CREE XPs and 60 degree optics. I'm still waiting on those damn Thomas drivers from nanotuners though! I'll post up my plans and pics soon. Link to comment

javisaman
Well I just finished my DIY LED light. I'll post pictures of it soon. Until then I'll just tease with a few pictures of some of my corals under just the royal blues LEDs. Hope you enjoy. Also all comments are appreciated! I'd especially like to get some feedback on my LED system itself when I get the pictures posted. Link to comment

javisaman
I have a bunch of 60 degree optics for the CREE XP series LEDs. They are from LEDGroupBuy and have been custom painted black. $25 shipped. Right now bensanders has dibbs. Link to comment
javisaman
optics sold to bensanders. Anyone want a polyp of a true purple hornet. My colony is budding them all over the tank. I don't have much else though so in most cases shipping won't be worth it Link to comment

javisaman
So I just bought a new controller. The ReefAngel (reefangel.com). I need more control (LED dimming, wifi control, feeding, and waterchanging modes). My reefkeeper 2 will go up for sale I'm thinking $75 + shipping is fair. I must admit I tend to get distracted easily. For whatever reason I've been focusing on the tank a lot more lately, though I should be spending more time studying for my MCATs (3 weeks away!!). javisaman
Everything but the pH probe (i.e. display, relay box, temp probe, and manual). Link to comment
javisaman
Tonight as I was feeding my clams I noticed something strange coming from the bottom right corner of my tank. Literally hundreds of little creatures poured out. These were definitely not pods, since they all emanated from the same area. I suspect they are fry of some sort. I'm thinking maybe hermit crabs, but I'm honestly not sure. They have two eyes and appear to look like tiny shrimp. I took my turkey baster and sucked out over 100 and put them in a container to take pictures. Here they are. Tell me what you think. Full Size Full Size Full Size Link to comment
gabe_j
looks like a baby shrimp maybe mysis or something similar. either way free fish food lol also is that rk2 not capable of dimming the led drivers for a more natural sunrise/set than timers will provide? i'd like to be able to do that along with some redundancy with the heater. i'm not teribly worried about the ph i probably should be but ehh its all doing fine so i think its safe to say i'm not haveing big problems. javisaman
No the Reefkeeper 2 has no dimming capability. Remember it's the older one before the lite and elite. It isn't modular like those two. Link to comment
bensanders
Wow, cool little shrimp spawn you have there. They kind of look too small to be mysis (and I know all the frozen mysis we buy to feed our fish are actually freshwater mysis). Maybe they are a brine-like shrimp, or some type of iso/amphipod? They look too shrimpy to be a type of pod though.... I'm intrigued. Link to comment
javisaman
I took one and looked at it underneath a microscope. Definitely a type of shrimp. Link to comment
