Renegade545
I recently bought some Live rock that had some little mollusks on it that appeared to be zebra mussels. They are attached to my live rock and it appears i have two. Are they safe for my reef, or would it be a good idea to remove them? Link to comment
lakshwadeep
They are harmless filter feeders. Sadly, many just die of starvation in nutrient poor conditions of a reef tank. You don't need to remove them. Link to comment
fierceseaman
Aren't these considered invasive species in much of the US? If so, I would destroy them. Link to comment
lakshwadeep
They probably just have a generic mussel/clam shape. Zebra mussels should have striping like this: Link to comment
Break
The invasive species is freshwater I think. Link to comment
Renegade545
Thanks for the responses. I knew it wasn't Zebra mussels because they are freshwater, but it was something i knew it was similar to. BTW, zebra mussels don't always have stripes. Some are a solid light color. I used to live on the Rideau Canal in Canada which has been invaded by them, and there are several different versions. Link to comment
